Description

Standedge Tunnel, Looking for things to do with the family in West Yorkshire? Visit Standedge Tunnel and discover Britain's longest, deepest and highest canal tunnel. Have you ever stopped to think why the Huddersfield Narrow Canal engineers decided to tunnel in such an awkward place, how it helped to fuel canal mania and our Industrial Revolution, or what famous bit of slang it inspired that we still use today?

Step on board one of our volunteer-led family boat trips to explore deep beneath the beautiful Pennine countryside. Enjoy a canalside stroll in stunning surroundings or follow the Admiral's Trail, and top it all off with tea and cake in The Watersedge Coffee House.

Prices starts from £12 for adults, £10 for Child(2 - 15) and £36 for Family(2+2 or 1+3). If you are looking for Best place for day out with kids and families then this is the perfect destination offering fun, adventure, and unforgettable memories for everyone.

Features

  • Standedge Tunnel Boat trips: A great way to understand why we love our canals and tunnels so much is to take to the water on one of our boat trips. We run our Discovery Boat Ride (30-minute introduction to the tunnel) most Fridays, Saturdays and some Sundays. We have set up dates for the Through Trip Boat Ride (a one way two-hour tour along the full length of the tunnel) in 2025. Please check the website for updates.
  • The Watersedge Coffee House: The Watersedge Coffee House is serving up some delicious treats and family favourites. It's a lovely, cosy restaurant to enjoy a day out with the family or a catch up with friends. The café is now run by a volunteer group called Friends of Standedge. All proceeds raised are split between Canal & River Trust and the group, who use the money to maintain and further improve the site for visitors. Hot and cold drinks available, along with delicious cakes and cheese toasties.
