Welcome to Chichester Harbour, chichester Harbour is both the largest natural estuary in South East England and the largest recreational boating harbour in Europe, in terms of the number of moorings present. There are multiple environmental designations including a National Landscape, for its natural beauty, Sites of Special Scientific Interest, for the flora and fauna, a Special Protection Area, for the birdlife, a Special Area of Conservation, for the habitats, and a Ramsar Site, for the wetlands. Whatever your reason, Chichester Harbour is a wonderful place to visit.

Chichester Harbour Conservancy is a unique organisation that is the only Statutory Harbour Authority with responsibility for leisure, recreation and the conservation of nature. Our focus until 2050 will be on addressing the biodiversity crisis and advancing our preparedness for climate change and sea level rise. In doing this, we aspire to manage Chichester Harbour for the benefit of future generations, whilst keeping access open for our harbour communities to enjoy today.

Swimming: Chichester Harbour is not a designated bathing water, and much of the harbour is unsuitable for swimming.
Angling & Commercial Fishing: With the twice daily transformation from acres of saltmarsh and mudflats to a watery mass lapping up to its banks and sea walls Chichester Harbour presents a considerable challenge to the sea angler. Although traditional shore and small boat angling remains popular those of a more adventurous nature have been developing fly fishing techniques in recent times with some success and the angling kayak is now seen in increasing numbers on harbour waters.
Dark Skies: Dark Sky Discovery Sites are a nationwide network of places that provide great views and which are accessible to everyone. They have been nominated by local groups and organisations as their top local spot to see the stars.
Wildlife: Chichester Harbour is home to an abundance of incredible, rare wildlife. From marine life to bird-filled skies, many unique and incredible species can be seen in and around the harbour.

Family Activities:

Boat Trips: Take an organised trip on our eco-friendly boat and enjoy the stunning landscapes and wildlife which make the harbour their home. There are also specialist trips to see the Seals, suitable for those aged 8 or over.
Walking and Cycling: With over 56 miles of public footpaths and a variety of cycle paths including Salterns Way, there’s the opportunity to explore recommended routes or strike out on your own.
Wildlife Watching: Chichester Harbour is a haven for birdwatchers. Pack some binoculars and head to one of the bird hides or observation points.
Beach Days: West Wittering Beach is a fantastic spot for a family day out. The sandy beach is perfect for building sandcastles, playing games, or simply relaxing.
Watersports: With 14 sailing clubs there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy watersports as a family including sailing, paddleboarding, windsurfing, or kitesurfing.
Crabbing: Crabbing from Dell Quay is a simple and fun activity – just take a crabbing line, bait, and a bucket!
Explore Harbour Villages: There are a number of picturesque villages on the harbour. Visit Bosham and enjoy the quaint shops and cafes. During low tide, it’s fun to splash in the shallow water and explore the mudflats. Emsworth offers shops and restaurants, and Itchenor is the starting place for a number of walks with a ferry across the water to other parts of the harbour.
Picnic Spots: With great spots for picnicking just bring a blanket, food and drink, and enjoy a meal surrounded by nature.

Car: There are several pay and display and free car parks around Chichester Harbour. The car park at Itchenor is operated by Chichester Harbour Conservancy, public car parks on the Hampshire side are operated by Havant Borough Council and on the West Sussex side by Chichester District Council. There are also good rail or bus links, especially in the north of the Harbour, and getting here by foot or bike is possible too. There are electric vehicle charging stations around Chichester Harbour. As usual with using an EV, please plan ahead if you intend to charge your car whilst visiting.
Bus: The following bus services which cover the harbour area are run by Stagecoach South. For further information and timetables visit their website. Service 700: Southsea, Portsmouth, Havant, Chichester, Bognor, Littlehampton, Worthing, Hove, Brighton. Service 52/53: Witterings, Birdham, Bracklesham, East Wittering, West Wittering, Chichester. Service 30/31: Hayling Island, Gable Head, Mengham, Eastoke, Beachlands, West Town, Havant. Service 56: Old Bosham, Bosham, Fishbourne, Chichester, Arundel Park.
Train: You can access Chichester Harbour from a number of train stations along the northern border. There are stations at Havant, Warblington, Emsworth, Southbourne, Nutbourne, Bosham, Fishbourne and Chichester. Many of these stations connect with the bus services allowing access to the southern part of the harbour.
Parking: There are a number of car parks across Chichester Harbour including one at Itchenor, near to the Harbour Office.
