Features

  • Swanwick Junction Station: Swanwick Junction Station is the gateway to the museum complex. All of the train services stop here to allow visitors to alight and explore, catching a later train to return to Butterley. It is a typical junction station from the past and consists of buildings and structures rescued from other sites. Platform lights and benches and other railway station ephemera complete the period scene. It houses toilets, including those for disabled, Allport’s Emporium and the Deeley Function Room.
  • Matthew Kirtley Building: The Matthew Kirtley Building is the main exhibition hall for the Midland Railway Trust’s unique museum collection of historic locomotives, carriages and wagons. Here you will find the oldest surviving Midland Railway locomotive, built in Derby in 1866. Other featured exhibits include rare restored vintage carriages dating from 1866 to 1898, two carriages from the Royal Train, one from 1912 and the other from 1956, and restored goods vehicles, but there is much more besides.
  • West Shed Experience: This is the home of two LMS Stanier Pacific locomotives, “Princess Margaret Rose” and the “Duchess of Sutherland” built in the 1930s. Here you will also find other locomotives, a former Royal Saloon, used by Sir Winston Churchill during the Second World War, a restored Dynamometer Car, 21″ gauge locomotives originally built for Butlin’s Holiday Camps, a replica of the office of the locomotive designer Sir William Stanier and a small exhibits area. There is also a large viewing gallery over the workshop area, where you can see steam locomotives undergoing restoration.
  • Demonstration Signal Box: The Demonstration Signal Box provides a rare opportunity to visit a railway signal box with a traditional lever frame, as operational signal boxes are closed to the public for safety reasons. This gives some idea of a signalman’s working life and additionally gives a great overview of the surrounding area.
  • St. Saviour's Church: This Victorian “Tin Tabernacle” Church is a haven of peace and tranquility and is open for visitors to enjoy. Originally provided for railwaymen and their families, it is now used for meetings and occasional religious services, including wedding blessings (although not the actual marriage ceremony for legal reasons), funerals and memorial services.
  • Play Area: This small play area at Swanwick Junction allows children to let off some of their own steam.
  • Road Transport Gallery: The Road Transport Gallery is open on most days when trains are running. It houses a collection of buses and other fascinating road vehicles. The Gallery is run by the Midland Road Transport Group.
  • Fork Truck Heritage Centre: The Fork Truck Heritage Centre houses a collection of historic fork lift trucks is usually open most weekends.
