Loch Garten Osprey Centre

Description

Loch Garten Osprey Centre is set in the wildlife-rich Caledonian pine forest of Abernethy, offering a unique nature experience unlike anywhere else in the UK. Visitors can explore stunning woodland landscapes filled with towering Scots pines, heather, and juniper, alongside a diverse range of wildlife. Throughout the year, the area is alive with seasonal spectacles, from breeding ospreys in spring to flocks of geese in autumn.

The centre features peaceful walking trails like the Big Pines and Two Lochs trails, perfect for spotting birds such as crested tits and goldeneye ducks, as well as red squirrels and dragonflies in summer. Visitors can even hand-feed coal tits, enjoy tranquil loch views, and learn about the vital role of deadwood in the ecosystem. Accessible picnic areas, free parking, and child-friendly facilities make it welcoming for all ages.

Entry prices are £5.00 for adults, £2.50 for children aged 5–17, free for under 5s, and £3.50 for students.

A visit here offers a peaceful escape into nature, where wildlife encounters are up close and personal. It’s an ideal place for families, nature enthusiasts, and anyone seeking to connect with Scotland’s wild beauty. The blend of rich biodiversity, scenic trails, and immersive experiences makes Loch Garten Osprey Centre a must-visit destination.

Features

  • Big Pines trail: You’ll walk through the best bits of woodland on the trails here. Look out for massive “Granny” Scots pines (trees which provide seed for the next generation of trees) and juniper bushes. You’ll see that we don’t remove dead trees – they’re vital for a healthy forest. Listen and look for great spotted woodpeckers, especially on dead trees, and in late summer, look for white, creeping ladies’ tresses orchids.
  • Two Lochs trail: Look for lying and standing deadwood. It provides food, shelter and nesting holes for bugs, animals and birds, and when it rots it returns vital nutrients to the soil. Listen for flocks of crossbills flitting through the trees searching for pine cones, then rest and soak up the views over the peaceful lochs. The water is peaty brown and, surprisingly, supports very few fish!
