Features

  • The Abbey: From Generation to Generation, The Abbey has brought a wonderful, interactive Visitor Experience opened in 2019 and tells the stories of the many generations of people who have lived, worked, studied and prayed inside Kylemore Abbey’s solid granite walls. The Visitor Experience brings these stories to life in stunning fashion with the use of historical photographs, audio-visual presentations, displays of artefacts from the Kylemore archive, historical costumes, and beautifully restored period rooms.
  • Victorian Walled Garden: Kylemore Abbey's Victorian Walled Garden is an oasis of ordered splendour in the wild Connemara Countryside. Developed along with the Castle in the late 1800s it once boasted 21 heated glasshouses and a workforce of 40 gardeners. One of the last walled gardens built during the Victorian period in Ireland, it was so advanced for the time that it was compared in magnificence with Kew Gardens in London. Comprised of roughly 6 acres, the Garden is divided in two by a beautiful mountain stream.
  • The neo-Gothic Church: Just a five minute walk from the Abbey, along the shores of Lough Pollucapal lies Kylemore’s enchanting neo - Gothic Church. Described as a ‘Cathedral in Miniature’, this fourteenth century style, elegant building is a lasting testament to the love of Mitchell Henry for his wife Margaret. On your visit you may be lucky enough to enjoy one of the many musical performances that take place here throughout the year. The architecture of this sandstone building is remarkable, it replaces the typical grotesque features of gothic structures such as gargoyles with delicate flower, bird, and angel features.
  • Hikes, Tracks & Trails: Kylemore estate is fortunate to be the home to one of the few woodlands in Connemara, and home to the Best Walks in Galway. The very name “Kylemore” is derived from the old Irish place name “Coill Mor” meaning “Big Wood”. At the heart of Kylemore estate is an ancient native woodland. Several 19th-century travel journals describe an old forest in the Kylemore Valley before the Castle was built by the Henry’s.

Facilities

Food & Drinks: Kylemore Restaurant is renowned for its traditional home-cooked food which has always been an important part of the traditional Benedictine welcome. From delicious and healthy soups, stews and salads to our famed scones, brown bread and apple pies there is plenty of choice for you and your family to enjoy a true flavour of Kylemore.
