Kilkenny Castle and Parklands, few buildings in Ireland can boast a longer history of continuous occupation than Kilkenny Castle. Founded soon after the Norman conquest of Ireland, the Castle has been rebuilt, extended and adapted to suit changing circumstances and uses over a period of 800 years.

Each year, hundreds of thousands of visitors come to see this grand country house and walk through its fifty acres of rolling parkland with mature trees and an abundance of wildlife. Other features include a formal terraced rose garden, woodlands and a man-made lake, which were added in the nineteenth century. There is also a tearoom, playground and several orienteering trails for visitors to enjoy.

Explore the Castle: Kilkenny Castle has been standing for over eight hundred years, dominating Kilkenny City and the South East of Ireland. Originally built in the 13th century by William Marshall, 4th Earl of Pembroke, as a symbol of Norman control, Kilkenny Castle came to symbolise the fortunes of the powerful Butlers of Ormonde for over six hundred years.
Park & Gardens: The pathways at Kilkenny Castle Park are for the enjoyment of everyone, regardless of ability. Please be considerate and respectful of all other users while using the park. In previous centuries the Castle was surrounded by parklands and enclosed by gardens with generous tree planting. This was gradually whittled away and changed over the centuries and, when the castle was first handed over to the people of Kilkenny in the 1960s, only fifteen acres of land was attached.
The Collection: As early as the 16th century, the Ormonde family were important patrons of the arts, when James Butler 9th earl (1504-46) commissioned his portrait from Hans Holbien the younger, one of the greatest portraitists of the time at the court of Henry the VII. The 17th century ducal collection was the largest and finest of its time in Ireland; numbering over 500 paintings, 200 tapestries, oriental furniture, silver, and objects d’art.
Characters of Kilkenny Castle: The 800 years of Kilkenny Castle’s history are associated with the fortune and decline of the Marshal & Butler families.
Exibitions: This exhibition, researched and curated by Dr. Jane Fenlon, brings us right back to medieval times, a time when Ireland was as intertwined with European life as it is today.
