- History of Hoghton: A thousand years of people living on the site of Hoghton Tower: a thousand years of royal visitors and literary and artistic greats, of conflict, intrigue, celebration and strife. A beautiful place with amazing tales to tell; a history of England played out in Lancashire. Today’s Tower might have been built in 1565 by Thomas Hoghton, but he was far from the first; previous structures here date all the way back to 1109. The hilltop location, which made Hoghton Tower strategically crucial for centuries, now guarantees brilliant views to the Lakes, the Irish Sea and Wales, from the heart of the famous county which gives it so much of its identity.

Your feet will be wearing smooth the same stone and timber trodden by the likes of King James I, Dickens and Shakespeare. Hoghton Tower’s rich history – which goes back as far as William the Conqueror – says a lot about Lancashire and England, but when told by our guides it’s an entertaining, revealing and human story, of why Shakespeare was here in the first place, how King James I ‘knighted’ a loin of beef; “Sirloin”, and exactly which ‘Peaky Blinders’ scenes were played out here.

The Wilderness Garden with its large, lush lawn fringed by a textured herbaceous border and beautiful topiary. Leading to the East Wing are the romantic Dorothy Steps and, just beyond the parapet walls, you can glimpse the ancient fairy-tale woodland. A narrow doorway leads to the Rose Garden, the most formal and intimate area of the grounds. In high summer, magnificent roses dazzle the senses. The flowerbeds are formal, the yews clipped, the scents powerful.

There’s something timelessly fascinating about the magical, miniature world of the dolls’ house, and we have plenty of vintage ones to exercise your imagination. Peep through the tiny windows of over 70 of them, from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries, and discover the detailed, immaculately-executed little worlds within.
