Renowned for its breeding colonies of Sandwich, common and Arctic terns, Cemlyn Bay is a hive of seabird activity in spring and summer. Headland paths offer dramatic land and seascapes during autumn and winter. The brackish lagoon is separated from the sea by a remarkable shingle ridge. 

Cemlyn, cared for by National Trust Cymru, is now voluntary smoke-free zones as part of a landmark initiative launched with ASH Wales to safeguard nature, wildlife and community wellbeing. What to see

Top trails: 

  • Cemlyn shingle ridge walk: Discover a trail along the shingle ridge and watch a host of water birds on the lagoon at Cemlyn National Nature Reserve. This circular trail will take you across a causeway and along country lanes at Cemlyn Bay. It's perfect for walkers and wildlife spotters. Dogs are welcome to join you as well.
  • The Trwyn Cemlyn walk on Anglesey: This walking trail around the coastal headland celebrates some of Anglesey’s industrial heritage, its rich wildlife and a pioneering aviator. Enjoy the sea breeze and views of rocky islands along the way.
  • Cemlyn and Llanrhwydrus circular walk: A truly atmospheric three-mile walk, where you'll have the chance to see spiritual sites, rock formations and wildlife on the lagoon. If you time it right you'll catch the sun setting over the Irish Sea.

  • By road: A5025 from Valley, follow sign to Cemlyn National Nature Reserve in Tregele (opposite Douglas Inn). On approach to Cemlyn NNR take second turning to the right then turn right again, after farm buildings, past Bryn Aber walled garden to the car park.
  • By train: Closest station at Holyhead is 12 miles away (19km), see Transport for Wales.
  • By bus: Amlwch to Holyhead route stops at Tregele (45 minute walk), see Transport for Wales.
  • Cycling: National Cycle Network Route 566 passes close by.
  • Parking: at Bryn Aber car park, Cemlyn. Please note that this car park is affected by the tides.
