Features

  • Beer Stone:
    • Origin: Beer Freestone is a Chalk Limestone formed around 120 million years ago during the Cretaceous period. It consists mainly of microscopic planktonic remains. Over time, pressure turned it into pure white chalk.
    • Characteristics: Found in a 13-20 foot seam, Beer Stone is prized for fine carving due to its water saturation and lack of fossils. Once exposed to air, it hardens and becomes up to five times stronger.
    • Formation: Above the chalk seam, there are clay and flint layers from the Eocene Epoch and Pleistocene periods.
  • Beer Stone Usage: Beer Stone is used in many prestigious buildings, including Exeter Cathedral, Westminster Abbey, and the Tower of London. It’s also found in 24 of Britain’s 44 cathedrals and numerous parish churches. After 1540, it was mainly used in secular buildings, such as The Guildhall (Exeter) and Shute House.
  • Work Conditions: Beer Stone was initially cut with picks and later with handsaws by candlelight, for up to 14 hours a day, six days a week.
  • The Bats of Beer Quarry Caves: Beer Quarry Caves is internationally significant as a bat hibernaculum, home to Greater and Lesser Horseshoe Bats that hibernate during the winter. Greater Horseshoe male bats tend to hibernate in clusters, while females and all Lesser Horseshoes are more solitary. These bats are easily identified by their distinctive horseshoe-shaped nose leaf, which aids their unique echo-location system. Other bat species, including Daubenton’s, Natterer’s, Whiskered, and the rare Bechstein’s Bat, also use the caves for hibernation, though in smaller numbers.
  • Beer Quarry Caves - Events: Offers a range of events throughout the year, including guided tours, special exhibitions, bat watching, seasonal activities, and heritage talks. Check the website for the latest event updates and booking information.
