Anderton Boat Lift is a unique heritage attraction in Cheshire, famously known as the “Cathedral of the Canals”. Built in 1875, it is one of only two working boat lifts in the UK, lifting boats 50 feet between the River Weaver and the Trent & Mersey Canal. The site combines historic engineering, beautiful grounds, and family-friendly experiences.
The attraction includes a free Visitor Centre with immersive exhibitions, interactive displays, and a cinematic centrepiece explaining how the lift works. Visitors can enjoy boat trips on the Edwin Clark trip boat, the thrilling Walking the Lift behind-the-scenes tour, and the fully accessible “Let’s Play!” outdoor playground for children. Surrounding activities include wildlife spotting, walking the grounds, enjoying the Heritage Cycle Trail, and relaxing at the coffee shop with lift views.
Entry to the visitor centre and grounds is FREE, with parking priced at £2 for 3 hours or £3 for the full day. Boat trip prices are £12.00 for adults, £10.00 for concessions, £8.00 for young people (5–15), £35.00 for a family ticket (2+2), and £1.00 for under-5s. Additional experiences such as the Walking the Lift tour are £5 per person.
Overall, Anderton Boat Lift offers a fascinating mix of industrial heritage and relaxed outdoor enjoyment. It allows visitors to understand remarkable Victorian engineering while enjoying scenic canal and river views. This attraction is ideal for families, history lovers, walkers, cyclists, and anyone looking for a memorable and educational day out in Cheshire.
