Anderton Boat Lift

Description

Anderton Boat Lift is a unique heritage attraction in Cheshire, famously known as the “Cathedral of the Canals”. Built in 1875, it is one of only two working boat lifts in the UK, lifting boats 50 feet between the River Weaver and the Trent & Mersey Canal. The site combines historic engineering, beautiful grounds, and family-friendly experiences.

The attraction includes a free Visitor Centre with immersive exhibitions, interactive displays, and a cinematic centrepiece explaining how the lift works. Visitors can enjoy boat trips on the Edwin Clark trip boat, the thrilling Walking the Lift behind-the-scenes tour, and the fully accessible “Let’s Play!” outdoor playground for children. Surrounding activities include wildlife spotting, walking the grounds, enjoying the Heritage Cycle Trail, and relaxing at the coffee shop with lift views.

Entry to the visitor centre and grounds is FREE, with parking priced at £2 for 3 hours or £3 for the full day. Boat trip prices are £12.00 for adults, £10.00 for concessions, £8.00 for young people (5–15), £35.00 for a family ticket (2+2), and £1.00 for under-5s. Additional experiences such as the Walking the Lift tour are £5 per person.

Overall, Anderton Boat Lift offers a fascinating mix of industrial heritage and relaxed outdoor enjoyment. It allows visitors to understand remarkable Victorian engineering while enjoying scenic canal and river views. This attraction is ideal for families, history lovers, walkers, cyclists, and anyone looking for a memorable and educational day out in Cheshire.

Features

  • Visitor Centre: For a fantastic family day out, visit Anderton Boat Lift and our free visitor centre. Find out how this amazing lift works and why it was so important. The lower level of our visitor centre houses an exhibition, looking at the lift’s history and the people who worked on and around it. There are lots of interactive, hands-on elements and we have a cinematic centrepiece. You’ll be able to explore the history of the local area and learn about the origins of the saying ‘any man worth his salt’, as well as uncover some of the fascinating artefacts from our designated museum collection.
  • Boat trips on the Edwin Clark: The best way to experience the lift is the climb aboard the Edwin Clark. Our 150-year-old lift is currently receiving some TLC and will be out of action for the summer so whilst (sadly) our visitors won’t be able to see it in action, you can still marvel at the ‘Cathedral of the Canals’ from a unique perspective on board the Edwin Clark trip boat as it transports you from the base of the lift and along the Weaver Navigation.
  • Walking the lift tour: Do you dare to stand on the top of the Anderton Boat Lift? Our unique behind the scenes tour is not for the faint-hearted, the tour starts in our visitor centre before you're guided out along the aqueduct, taken into the previously unseen control room and machine deck and finally out up on top of the lift!
  • Let's Play! at Anderton Boat Lift: Our fantastic outdoor playground is themed on the local environment designed to look a bit like the lift itself. In the play area there's a bridge, control house and mooring area and it cleverly uses blue surfacing so children can pretend they're on the water. It's also fully accessible for wheelchairs and pushchairs.

Facilities

  • Parking: Parking available.
  • Food & Drinks: Our coffee shop, with its full height glass wall over-looking our amazing boat lift, offers a selection of refreshments to eat in or take away. Choose from a wide range of hot drinks and mouth-watering snacks including breakfasts, pizza, paninis, sandwiches and jacket potatoes or maybe try one of our delicious cakes.
  • Picnic spot: You can take your drinks out on the outdoor decking which offers fantastic views over the grounds and lift. On good weather days, take advantage of the picnic areas, scattered in the impressive shadow of this mighty structure.
  • Toilets: Toilets (including baby changing facilities and disabled toilets) are inside the visitor centre. We also have toilets in the grounds and on the trip boat.
