Curriculum
The curriculum at Wandsworth Preparatory School has been carefully designed to ensure that each child is able to fulfil their individual potential. Our curriculum is challenging, diverse and engaging. The curriculum takes into account the expectations within the National Curriculum yet, as an Independent School, we are not bound by it. We enjoy the freedom to be able broaden and deepen the educational experiences of all the children in our care. They aim to create a learning environment where children are not only prepared for examination success, but also develop a life-long love of learning. Children who can work and think independently, are motivated, creative and confident with the skills to solve problems, collaborate and communicate effectively, will be best placed to succeed at senior schools and in life itself; these are the qualities we seek to encourage and develop.
Extra-Curricular Activities
A wide-range of activities enriches the taught curriculum. We encourage children from Reception to Year 6 to be involved in a range of activities, helping to develop and nurture every child’s strengths and interests. Peripatetic music teaching is also available for a wide range of musical instruments, led by our in-house music teachers. They also run a daily Breakfast Club, allowing busy parents to drop their children off from 08.00am each morning. Children can enjoy a selection of hot and cold breakfast options, providing a substantial and nutritious start to their day.
Music
Teaching and learning is underpinned by Music Express. Music Express provides a carefully-structured progressive scheme of work for music, integrating singing, playing, listening and composing. Planning also enables a cross-curricular, topic-based approach to music, in order that learning about music is developed whilst exploring different topics and is linked with other curriculum subjects.Children prepare a range of songs for key events such as for drama productions, the Christmas Concert, the Easter Assembly and the Summer concert. Workshops and visits are arranged to give all pupils the chance of working with outside professionals.
Sport
At Wandsworth Prep, they believe in a 'sports for all' approach. All year groups, from Reception to Key Stage 2, are taught by a specialist PE teacher. In the Early Years Foundation Stage, Years 1 and 2 children are taught to be active and interactive, and to develop their coordination, control, and movement. We provide opportunities for children to become physically confident in a way which supports a healthy and active lifestyle. Within lessons, children are given the opportunity to work as individuals, in a group or as part of a team. Children develop core movement, become increasingly competent and confident and access a broad range of opportunities to extend their agility, balance and co-ordination. Reception and Year 1 pupils are taught P.E on site and Year 2 learn at Wandsworth Common. Reception and Year 1 attend swimming lessons in the summer term to kickstart their love of swimming and to begin those swimming foundations.
