Waingels College

Woodley, Reading RG5 4RF, United Kingdom
11-18 Years

Description

Waingels College is a State Secondary School for kids aged 11 to 18 (Gender - Mixed)

They are very fortunate that the buildings already provide the perfect setting for the students learning journey. Completely rebuilt in 2010 following a multi-award-winning design, our buildings are modern, spacious, light, technology-rich and built entirely out of wood. There is a strong community focus – each of our four main blocks has a central forum staircase, and the buildings face inwards to our courtyard – filled with trees whose leaves follow the seasonal colours of the buildings – Green, Yellow, Red and Brown. Waingels is a comprehensive school and they offer a broad and balanced curriculum, effectively differentiated and enriched to meet the needs of all students regardless of their background, advantage and ability. The curriculum evolves and is agile to respond to the needs of the students.

Facilities

Curriculum
They have the Triple A programme which starts in Year 7 and provides stretch1Y1A0291 and challenge for students aiming to achieve at least 3 As at A Level. They also have a catch-up programme for English and Maths to encourage students who need support to be secondary school ready. We invest in creative subjects such as Textiles, Art and Drama because we feel they make up an important part of a student’s holistic learning. Also, they offer vocational courses such as Beauty and Travel and Tourism, college courses and an alternative curriculum for those students who are best suited to a different way of learning. These courses are further developed with some students being invited to attend work experience in Year 10. They have a three year Key Stage 3 in order for students to develop the necessary foundation skills, knowledge and stepping stones from Key Stage 2, into Year 7, Year 8 and Year 9 in preparation for Key Stage 4. In Year 9 students have the opportunity to choose to delve deeper into a variety of different creative subjects. At GCSE they aim to give students the most amount of choice.  Whilst encouraging students to pursue the Ebacc qualification, others may choose to study a range of different GCSE and vocational qualifications such as Economics, Business, Psychology, Food & Nutrition, Health and Social Care and Computer Science to name just a few. Religious Studies and PSHCE are delivered across the curriculum by specialist teachers and in discreet lessons which makes up an important part of the curriculum offering.

Features

Things to note

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT
The pastoral curriculum supports pupils in their personal development through engaging tutorial activities and assemblies linked to our core school values, raising awareness of local, national and international events, developing key learning and life skills, and giving studdents an opportunity to raise their voice. Resources are presented by a number of staff around the school, students will be able to gain a greater understanding of the importance of their formal curriculum in the wider world. The pastoral curriculum shares and celebrates diversity, promoting multiculturalism and equality through assemblies and linked tutorial sessions. All students at Waingels are encouraged to participate in building our pastoral curriculum, whether as part of the School Council or on a matter of personal interest, and we are very proud of the student-led assemblies they have had on Black History Month, Remembrance Day, and Kindness and Anti-Bullying Awareness. By linking with the work of the Careers & Enterprise Lead and the Lead Practitioners for Literacy, Numeracy and STEM, the pastoral curriculum connects the work done in most lessons with the future aims and aspirations of the students. They at Waingels are very aware of the importance of student wellbeing and students are supported in making good choices and making healthy relationships through the pastoral curriculum, with relevant resources being shared by staff responsible for PSHE, Citizenship, Student Wellbeing and Mental Health.
