The Early Years (ages 2 - 4)
The Early Years Department provides each and every child with a caring, supportive and fun start to their school life. They have a genuine love of teaching young children and they strive to provide them with a caring, happy, fun, secure and nurturing environment in which they can thrive.Nursery at The Hawthorns is a magical time and a wonderful place for children to start their school life. The experienced Nursery Teachers and Teaching Assistants build upon the natural curiosity evident in each child, guiding them in their learning through a broad range of engaging activities based around each child’s interests and passions that support individual development and emotional growth. In this way the foundation for a lifelong love of learning are laid.

The Lower School (ages 5-7)
In Years 1 and 2, they build upon the independent learning and problem solving skills fostered within the Early Years. They encourage the children to embrace a variety of creative learning challenges, helping them to develop their team working and perseverance skills. The aim is to ensure each child is happy and well-motivated. Class based teaching allows us to treat every child as an individual and we offer a positive, well-ordered learning environment, where success is celebrated. As each child develops and grows in confidence and skill, we continue to teach the four core areas of the Curriculum; English, Mathematics, Science and the Expressive Arts. These areas allow children to extend their learning, so that they can relate their knowledge and imagination to the world around them in a meaningful way.

The Middle School (ages 7-11)
The warmth set up in the Early Years and Lower School continues in the Middle School. As each child joins Year 3 (aged 7) they continue to enjoy classroom based teaching with their Form Teacher and a similar level of teaching from specialist teachers. Each Form Teacher looks after and teaches most of the timetable to their class thereby ensuring thorough oversight and care of all aspects of the child’s life at school. The Middle School builds upon the foundations laid in the Lower School and it is in every sense part of a natural progression through The Hawthorns.Setting children into smaller teaching groups based upon ability in English and Maths ensures each child can work at a pace that is best for them and allows them to make the best progress.

The Upper School (ages 11-13)
As children move into the Upper School, schemes of work combine the best of the National Curriculum, Common Entrance and The Hawthorns Compass Curriculum ensuring all children are well prepared for senior school. The Hawthorns Compass Curriculum forms the key framework of the education at the top of the School building upon the best of traditional Common Entrance syllabi and building in wider working skills. European and wider cultural links are developed and pupils experience opportunities ranging from the latest e-learning to stimulating talks and presentations, residential field trips and visits. Public speaking, leadership, service and teamwork skills are developed through a rich variety of projects and challenges. Self-evaluation is encouraged as part of each boy’s and girl’s development towards more independent learning.
