Penarth Group School is Independent Secondary school in Selective for kids aged 8 to 16 (Gender - 8 to 16 )
The school is registered with the Department for Education (DfE) to meet the needs of up to 15 pupils. We provide education for students with complex educational needs, communication difficulties and challenging behaviour. All of the young people have an Education Health Care Plan (EHCP). The school accepts students with Social, Emotional, Mental Health and Behavioural needs, though they may face additional challenges and diagnoses including ADHD, Asperger’s, SpLD, MLD, OCD, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, Dyscalculia, Foetal Alcohol Syndrome or a variety of other conditions.Additionally, many of the students have serious social issues and very difficult home lives resulting in complex emotional difficulties. All students attending Penarth Group School have individual needs that have proved too complex to be addressed within a mainstream setting. The school provides effective support and a suitably differentiated curriculum, enabling them to progress and succeed to the best of their ability
Curriculum
The students follow a wide and varied curriculum that is geared to their age and ability which aims to prepare them for their next steps. The curriculum is organised into the national key stages where pupils will follow the key concepts of the National Curriculum. Due to the nature of the provision and the indidividual needs of each student not all students will follow the same curriculum plan and this will be discussed with the student, parent or carer and other professionals. All students will undertake a programme of study through all the key stages within the areas of: Lingustic, Mathematical, Scientific, Technological, Human & Social, Physical, Asethetic, Creative Education and PSHE. During Key stage 4 students can select options where they study for a specific qualification this may be a GCSE or a equivalant certifcate that prepares them for their next steps.
Special Educational Needs and Disabilities
Penarth Group School, in keeping with its mission and ethos, is committed to ensuring that all pupils make the best possible progress during their time with us. In addition, they seek to ensure that pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) are identified and received the supported needed to ensure they too make progress.
Selection Criteria: Selective
They offer any young people ages 11-16 the ability to learn and develop in a supportive and individual centred setting. They have the experience and expertise in providing education for those who have been identified to have a special educational need, social emotional behavioural difficulties or those with mild learning difficulties the opportunity to succeed. They have extensive experience in working with looked after children who are unable to access mainstream education. As a school we follow the National Curriculum but also have the ability to specialise our curriculum offer to the needs of the individual. The school provision offers a stable, support and nurturing educational placements for children and young people who are deemed to be unable to maintain a positive experience in mainstream educational settings or other providers. Over the past decade Penarth Group School has successfully worked with young people who would otherwise have left education with little opportunities but had fulfilled their potential leaving with recognised GCSE's and qualifications.
