Oliver House Preparatory School is Independent Primary school in Wandsworth for kids aged 3 to 11 (Gender - Mixed )
Oliver House School is an independent specialist school for boys and girls aged 6 to 19 who have mild, moderate and severe autism and associated complex learning needs, behaviours that may challenge and/or associated anxiety.
The school offers a warm and welcoming environment, where a positive education allows all pupils to experience success. Our ethos was created on the belief that a positive, supportive and achieving culture is essential for creating an outstanding school that meets the needs of young people who previously have had negative school experiences. These pupils need an understanding environment in which to rediscover success, self belief and re-engage with learning.
Curriculum
Oliver House School follows the National Curriculum but it is appropriately modified to each young person’s level. The school offers a tailored curriculum for pupils in Key Stage 1 to Key Stage 5 from pre-curriculum learning to GCSEs.
Therapy services
Here at Oliver House School, we are committed to supporting young people to express or talk about their issues through offering a range of therapeutic environments and services in both the school and our associated children’s homes.
Life skills
Oliver House School places a great deal of emphasis on helping our young people to develop their life skills. The school building has an Activities of Daily Living (ADL) kitchen which is available for all pupils to use, helping them to build independence in a safe and accessible environment. There is also a strong focus on life skills for the residential pupils living in our homes, with staff being sure to tailor this to the right level for each individual. Having the same staff working across our education and residential services also helps support the transfer of skills between school and home.
Community education
The curriculum model at Oliver House School involves a lot of community-based learning, with our young people usually going off-site at least once per day. We offer a range of community-based activities that our young people can choose from, according to their individual needs and preferences.
Built with the individual in mind
The main school building is split over two levels, with the upstairs catering for young people with high functioning autism and the downstairs designed for those with more complex needs. There are a number of sensory rooms around the site, including a dark room and a ball pool area, as well as a spa bath, play room and outside play area. There is also an indoor exercise area with trampolines and exercise bikes which our young people can use.
Off-site activities
Every pupil at Oliver House School has their own highly individualised curriculum, developed in consultation with the young person themselves and their parents/carers. The plan includes details of any activities they have chosen from the wide range of options offered by the school in the local community.
Selection Criteria: Selective
The admission process at Oliver House School is individually tailored to the young person who is considering attending the school. In some cases, the individual will be invited to come for a visit whereas for those with more severe learning difficulties, staff might go out to the young person and visit them in their current environment. Assessments are also offered if required.
All admissions are overseen by the school principal who has a solid understanding of autism and of what the school is able to offer. Leading the admissions process, she is able to ensure high quality placements that are in the best interests of the young person.
