Merton Court Preparatory School is a Independent Primary School for kids aged 3 to 11 (Gender - Mixed)
Merton Court is Sidcup’s oldest established preparatory school, founded in 1899, situated in the London Borough of Bexley. It is a small, family-run, private school with a caring community atmosphere where traditional values and a progressive environment meet to give modern children the best possible start in life. In the safe hands of a passionate and committed teaching team, Merton Court, now more than 300 strong, continues to embrace a truly transformational ethos within a vibrant and caring community atmosphere. Indeed the School is heavily involved in the local community, Sidcup and beyond and Dominic Price is Vice Chairman of Sidcup Business Investment District (BID). The School is an accredited member of the Independent Schools Association, a member of the Independent Schools’ Council, and is inspecte by the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI).
Early Years
On Thursday afternoons between 1.30pm and 2.30pm, prospective parents are invited to bring younger children (adult accompanied) to our ‘Tiny Tots & Toddlers Club’ for a real taste of Merton Court. These sessions will be held outside on the EY covered areas and entry will be via the gates to the lower (EY) playground. Please come dressed for the weather! It is a wonderful opportunity for you to meet and chat with staff and other prospective parents who are about to join school. £5 per session, including refreshments. We look forward to welcoming you for tea/coffee and a chat.
Junior
The Junior department at Merton Court is made up of Year 1 (J2) and Year 2 (J3). There are two forms in each year group with a maximum number of twenty pupils in each. The department provides a successful and seamless transition between Early Years, Foundation Stage and the Senior school (Key Stage 2). There is a strong focus on literacy and numeracy in the department. Children build-up and fine tune the skills attained in previous years. Cursive writing skills, first introduced in Reception, are continually improved and honed. English work starts becoming more formalised with a more defined Grammar, Comprehension and Creative Writing focus.
Senior
Thus begins the transition from the Junior School to the Senior School where children are encouraged to take more responsibility for themselves and their learning. The core curriculum is vital and children begin to experience more subject based teaching aided by subject specialists. Smaller group work sessions in English and Maths begin in the first half of the academic year which encourages confidence and progress in key skills. Homework continues with 1 subject per night which should be completed within a twenty minute period. Most children have the opportunity to represent the school in our main sports of rugby, netball, football, swimming and cricket.
SEND
The school welcomes all children who can make the most of the opportunities offered and can flourish in its caring environment. Please refer to the full Special Educational Needs and Disabilities and Admissions Policies for information about our provision for children with additional or special educational needs and/or disabilities.
Forest School
They started Forest School at Merton Court in September 2012. It is a concept that originated in Scandinavia in the 1950’s. The philosophy of Forest School is that the outdoors is used to facilitate learning. It encourages the children to have an awareness and respect for the outdoor environment and nature. Children are encouraged to develop independence skills, improve their decision making and raise their self- esteem through small achievable tasks.
PE and Sport
At Merton Court we believe that participation in PE and Games remains central to the cognitive, physical and social development of an all-round, balanced child. We believe that fit, healthy children are more ready to learn and we seek to educate them so that they may take responsibility for their own personal fitness. The school implements all aspects of PE in Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 of the National Curriculum, whilst celebrating the long-standing tradition of sport at the school, which continues to encourage the combination of team spirit and healthy competition. This is achieved through inter-house and inter-school sporting activities and events. The school is divided, for good-natured rivalry, into three houses; Merton, Modern and School.
