They want the best for everyone in our school. Our aim is to cultivate the capabilities for success in everyone; to achieve this we offer superb teaching and a wealth of opportunities for learning and personal development. Matthew Arnold School is a safe, supportive and challenging environment in which students can flourish; enjoying their learning and developing the skills they will need to be creative thinkers and successful, responsible adults.
Key Stage 3
By providing at Key Stage 3 a range of courses designed to meet the needs of every student at the school they hope to provide opportunities for all to do their best. A foundation literacy and numeracy course is provided for students needing more support in these areas. At Key Stage 4 students have the opportunity to specialise in certain subjects. They aim to provide learning opportunities by employing a wide range of teaching methods. Lessons should be rich and varied; students should know how well they are doing and what they need to do to improve.
Key Stage 4
Departments are always mindful of the the content and sequence of topics, but the best instruction for our students will be based on our support of their development as a learner, with a focus on metacognitive skills: getting and acting on feedback, working on strategies to aid memory (what we call ‘Making it stick’); thinking carefully around how they go about planning and producing their work.
Sixth Form
Matthew Arnold School’s Sixth Form is an integral part of a very successful and popular 11-18 years comprehensive school. They aim to provide all the students with the opportunity to realise their full academic potential while developing their interests and skills outside the classroom.
Extracurricular Activities
The school has a wide variety of extracurricular clubs, both at lunchtime and after school.
SEN and Disabilities
They are an inclusive school and the Inclusion Department supports all students in achieving their potential. They do this through provision in class, or by targeted interventions to assist students with literacy, numeracy, social skills and behavioural needs. Inclusion staff regularly review students’ needs and study programmes to ensure that the appropriate support and interventions are in place.
