Herne Church of England VA Junior School is a state primary school for kids aged 7 to 11.
Educational Visits: Throughout the year all children will make visits to places associated with their learning; in addition members of staff organise visiting speakers, special events, swimming sessions and performances by theatre companies. These curricular activities enhance the understanding of the topics studied and enrich the pupils’ experiences. However, all these additional activities have to be paid for and it is usually necessary to ask parents for a voluntary contribution towards the cost. No child will be excluded from an activity because the parents have not made a contribution, but the school may have to cancel a planned activity if there is insufficient financial support.
Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND): Consideration is given to all children with additional educational needs, including gifted and talented children, children with learning difficulties, children with physical disabilities and children with social and emotional issues. Class teachers, with the support of Teaching Assistants, are responsible for planning, implementing and reviewing an appropriate programme of work which takes into account each child’s individual needs. Class teachers and Teaching Assistants work closely with the school’s SEN Co-ordinator (SENCo) and Well-being team who offer advice and additional support to ensure that all children have access to the National Curriculum. The SENCo can also draw on the services of a variety of outside agencies should further support and advice be required.
Before and After School Club: The school operates a childcare service from 8.00 a.m. in the morning until school starts and from the end of the school day until 5.30 p.m. The cost of this service is currently £3.50 for the morning session, the afternoon sessions are £3.50 until 4.30 p.m. or £6.90 until 5.30 p.m. Places are strictly limited under the registration with OfSTED and so a ‘drop-in’ service is not always available. For further details please contact Mrs Barwick, School Club Leader, on 01227 374069 - the club is located in the mobile classrooms at the edge of the playground. Places are available to pupils of both Herne Junior and Herne Infant Schools and infant children are escorted to and from the infant school site.
