Description

Greater Manchester Alternative Provision is an OFSTED registered independent alternative provision based in Tameside. They work with local schools and education authorities to provide an environment for young people aged 11-16 who are not reaching their full potential in mainstream schools.

Facilities

  • They provide education and support, working collaboratively with the students, their families and their education providers and contributing to multi-agency assessments.
  • GMAP provides a safe and nurturing environment for students to develop their self esteem and complete their educational goals.
  • All courses and learning packages are tailored to suit the needs of the individual.
  • Students are taught in small groups based on their ability and on a one to one basis to provide extra support.
  • All students are given a key support worker who provides pastoral support.

Things to note

  • They offer a range of academic and vocational courses. GCSEs will be offered in core curriculum subjects such as Mathematics, English Language, English Literature and Science. These are offered alongside GCSEs in Religious Education, Citizenship and a level 1/2 in Health and social care.
  • All students will receive impartial careers advice provided by external agencies.
  • Personalised learning sessions are built into the school time table, allowing students to work in small focus groups in order to cater for their specific needs including literacy and numeracy.
  • All students are taught in groups based on their ability and age, allowing them to receive the support that they require. In addition to individual one to one support, extra support will also be offered to EAL pupils.
  • GMAP offers enrichment to all students, which will include outdoor activities, trips, creative, artistic and physical opportunities and much more. This will help students to work in teams to improve their social and communication skills which will in addition help them improve and assess their own attitude and behaviour.

Admission Details

On admission all students complete base line assessments. These assessments are used to give an accurate picture of the students starting points. This will provide teaching and pastoral staff with the relevant information to ensure that work is set at the correct level and maximise the progress made.

Individual targets are set and regularly reviewed with staff and students. Where underachievement is identified, action plans will be drawn up with strategies to address this underachievement.

Students will also be monitored on their attitudes to learning and behaviour, this is done through a points system that is monitored each lesson. The areas monitored include punctuality, behaviour, effort and attendance.

Each school or referring LEA will receive a weekly report which summarises the above areas and comments on specific issues that have arisen during the week.

Progress and attainment will be shared with parents and cares each term via a written report or upon request.
