Things to note

  • At BGS, every pupil in the Senior or Junior Schools will be involved in a musical performance of some sort during their time at school. 
  • At Bristol Grammar School every child is involved in outdoor activities, developing a strong sense of adventure in our pupils as they move up through the School.
  • A wide range of clubs are offered, some at lunchtime, others after school. Infant choices have included gardening, Lego, cookery, choir and Active Club. In the Juniors the number of choices grows: Art, Business Club, Chicken Club, Code Club, Russian and yoga have all been offered, alongside choir, orchestra and sports including badminton, rugby and netball.
  • Sport is played and enjoyed at every level at BGS, valued for its physical and mental health benefits.

Admission Details

Year 7–Year 10: Main entry point to the Senior School is in the Autumn term of Year 7, although entry is possible to other year-groups or at other times of the school year, dependent on the availability of spaces. Entrance assessments for entry in September 2023 will be held in January 2023. Further details will be published in autumn 2022.

Year 7: A 45-minute Creative Writing paper, a 20-minute Comprehension paper, a 30-minute Problem-solving paper, and a 20-minute Arithmetic paper. To help your child prepare for the entrance assessments, towards the end of the Autumn term they will send a sample of each of the papers to all those who have applied. Later applicants will receive the samples with your application acknowledgement email.  

Year 8: Papers in English and Mathematics, and a Modern Language (ML) linguistic competency test.

Year 9 and 10: Papers in English, Mathematics and Science and a Modern Language (ML) linguistic competency test.

There is a discount of 5% for a second or subsequent sibling attending the Sixth Form, Senior or Junior and Infant Schools. The discount will be shown on the older sibling’s account(s).

Scholarships

Year 7 Scholarships:

  • Academic Scholarships: Academic Scholarships are available for entry into Year 7. These scholarships are awarded based on academic merit. 
  • Creative and Performing Arts and Sport Scholarships: They offer Creative and Performing Arts Scholarships (Art, Dance, Drama and Music) and Sport Scholarships in Year 7 to entrants showing exceptional ability in these areas. 
  • Headmaster's Scholarships Any Year 7 candidate who is shortlisted for the Academic Scholarship as well as the Creative and Performing Arts and/or the Sport Scholarship will be considered for the Headmaster's Scholarship.

Sixth Form Scholarships:

  • Headmaster’s Awards - up to five awards. These are for applicants who will positively contribute to school life and show an all-round academic ability. 
  • Academic Awards: These are for applicants who will be studying 'A' levels or the IB Diploma, and show exceptional academic ability in two or more of the subjects they wish to take in the Sixth Form.
