The Yorkshire Air Museum near York is a registered charity and accredited museum. It opened in 1985 and has grown into the UK’s largest independent museum of aviation. Our motto: to Honour, Educate & Inspire.

Explore the Museum from pre-World War Two aircraft to iconic fighter jets of the Cold War, we have one of the biggest collections of aircraft in the UK and are also the Allied Forces Memorial. Facilities include exhibitions and displays, a Cafe, kids playground, picnic areas and 90% physical accessibility.

  • Memorials: As well as being an air museum we are also the Allied Air Forces Memorial. You will find a number of memorials around the site, including a Women's Memorial, 77 Squadron Memorial and a Chapel.
  • Plenty for Kids: Check out our playground, custom made for the museum to create a safe and fun place for children. We also have kids' trails and plenty of space for children to explore.​
  • The Gift Shop: Our shop offers a selection of carefully chosen gifts for aviation enthusiasts. We sell models, books, toys, clothing and more. There's something in our store for everyone.
  • The Astra Cinema: Named after the picture houses on RAF bases, the Astra cinema seats 42 people, with an up-to-date audio-visual system married to a traditional 1930s/40s setting. We show a mix of archive newsreel footage and original material, usually based on the people and events linked with the aircraft here at the museum. Experience glimpses of history in a truly historical setting.

Facilities

  • Dogs: Dogs are welcome at the Yorkshire Air Museum. 

What to see

Events:

  • March 22nd: Engine Runs. The Nimrod and Jet Provost are having anti-deterioration engine runs. These will take place around 11.00am and there is no extra charge - normal admission day.
  • April 12th: Open Cockpits. A chance to climb inside the cockpits of some of your favourite YAM aircraft. Around 10 are scheduled to be involved, including Jaguar, Tucano, Tornado, Buccaneer, Devon, Dragonfly, Harrier, Nimrod and Dakota. Normal Admissions day BUT there is an extra charge of £10 for a cockpit access wristband. Open to adults and children. Numbers are limited.

  • By Car: From the York Outer Bypass /A64, follow the brown Air Museum signs toward the A1079 (Hull) junction. Elvington Lane is immediately off the roundabout at the A1079 exit. We are two miles down this road, on the right (Halifax Way).
  • By Bus: Bus services are operated by York Pullman Bus, from York City Centre and the Railway Station. Monday to Saturday: From York to Yorkshire Air Museum. 
  • By Plane: It’s possible to fly into the Yorkshire Air Museum. You’ll find the huge runway of Elvington Airfield right next door. To fly in, you will need to contact them directly via their website.
