  • The Castle: Wentworth Castle and Stainborough Park is located approximately 3km south west of Barnsley in South Yorkshire.  The estate’s Grade 1 landscape and formal gardens are nationally significant for their extensive monuments, housing some of the earliest gothic follies in the country.  The Pleasure Ground displays layers of garden design characteristic of different periods and fashions, including an early 18th century Union Jack garden, a Victorian flower garden and 20th century collections of rhododendrons, camellias and magnolias.
  • The Gardens: A series of garden rooms, There are 40 acres of formal gardens at Wentworth Castle st around the beautiful Georgian mansion.  Their  structure and design reflect different periods of garden history and the differing interests of the generations of Wentworths who lived here.  There are also 20th century additions, such as the three national plant collections.
  • The Parkland: Historic Stainborough Park, Wentworth Castle near Barnsley is the historic home of the Earls of Stafford and is now in the care of the Wentworth Castle and Stainborough Park Heritage Trust. Today, the Trust cares for nearly 500 acres of landscaped parkland, woodland and farmland as well the more formal pleasure gardens which surround the main house.  Together these make up South Yorkshire’s only grade 1 historic landscape.

  • By Car from the M1: Please exit the motorway at Junction 37 towards Barnsley and following the brown signs to Wentworth Castle, following the map below. Sat Nav users please use post code S75 3EN which will bring you to our visitors’ car park via Park Drive. NB Please take care crossing the final cross roads before you reach the estate at Stainborough.
  • By Rail or Coach: Nearest train station is Barnsley Interchange (3 miles), and the nearest local station is at Dodworth (1.5 miles)
  • By Bus: Services 23, 23A and 24 from Barnsley Interchange to Penistone, Stocksbridge and Denby Dale run along Lowe Lane to the site. click here to visit the Traveline website
  • Cyclists: The Trans Pennine Trail runs just 1/4 mile from the Stainborough gateway to the estate.  Cyclists (even muddy ones!) always find a warm welcome at our cafe.
  • Parking: The Visitor Centre café, shop and car park are closed.
