Warkworth Castle, You’ll discover how the great baronial fortress-palace Warkworth Castle worked in its 15th-century heyday as you’re guided around by its medieval inhabitants. Using listening posts, colour-coding and symbols, five different routes lead you into every nook and cranny of the great castle. Each trail culminates in a striking sculpture, linking the character to events in the castle’s history.  

Don’t miss the engaging audio tour, as you explore explore Warkworth’s Great Tower from its wine cellars and kitchens to its great hall and chapel. The Duke’s Rooms in the tower are regularly open to visitors, with volunteer guides.

  • A Trail around Warkworth: Striking sculptures have been installed in the grounds of Warkworth Castle creating a series of interactive trails. Follow a trail and learn about the people who lived in or near the castle in the early 15th century. 
  • The Cross-Shaped Keep: See the awe-inspiring keep as you wander around the nearly intact circuit of towered walls at this spectacular medieval castle. Head to the top for glorious views over the River Coquet and Northumberland countryside.
  • The Percys: Look out for the lion badge carved throughout the castle as you explore. This was the badge of the powerful Percy family who wielded almost kingly power in the north. They owned Warkworth and nearby Alnwick Castle, where their descendants still live today. 
  • The Hermitage: Continue your adventure by taking a walk half a mile up river, followed by a boat trip to discover the Hermitage, a religious building carved out of the rock. 
  • The Duke's Rooms: Visit the Duke’s Rooms on the second floor of the Keep, the only furnished rooms in the castle. Restored for the family to host picnics and important visitors, these rooms were lavishly decorated with tapestries and gilded leather on the walls.

  • Parking: Parking (approx 48 spaces) outside the castle is free to English Heritage members displaying a valid car sticker. Non-members must pay. At busy times, there is additional (charged) parking in Warkworth Town, about 200m away, or a long-stay car park near the beach (charges may apply).
  • Food And Drink: Vending machine selling tea and coffee, and light snacks (ice-cream, crisps and confectionery).
  • Toilets: Male, female and disabled toilets available.
