What to see

The Collection
The trees in the Yorkshire Arboretum come from temperate regions around the world, including Chile and Australasia as well as the more expected North America, Europe and Asia. Originally planted in open fields, the collection has been winnowed by thirty or more winters; while there have been losses, the survivors demonstrate the vast range of hardy trees that can be expected to survive in North Yorkshire.

Wildflower Meadows
The primary aim at the Yorkshire Arboretum is the development and maintenance of the tree collection, helping to maintain genetic diversity in a global and national context. In doing so we also create habitat for wildlife that can find refuge here from the intensive agriculture in the surrounding countryside. In living memory the UK has seen a huge loss of wildflower-rich grasslands - over 97% have disappeared since the 1930s. This has had a major impact on our native pollinators – three-quarters of butterfly species are in decline and there have been significant losses of wild bumblebees.

Ray Wood
Ray Wood is an enchanting woodland garden with a remarkable collection of plants. There is something of interest to see throughout the year, but the peak flowering season comes in Spring as the rhododendrons put on a fabulous colourful show.Having become overgrown, a restoration of the garden by staff and volunteers from the Castle Howard Arboretum Trust began in 2010 to bring it back to its former glory as one of the finest woodland gardens in the north of England. Visitors can once again enjoy the beauty of this special place where the first plants start to flower as early as January and there is usually something in flower until the autumn colours put on their final show of the year.

Biodiversity
The Yorkshire Arboretum forms an island of relatively undisturbed habitat in a sea of intensively farmed agricultural land. As such it functions as a refuge for a wide diversity of wildlife, plants and other organisms that are no longer common in the countryside.Surveys in recent years have found that the site is host to 225 species of native wild plants, 75 species of birds and there are 9 regularly seen terrestrial mammals.
