Description

The St Ives Treasure Trail is a self-guided detective mystery adventure set in the historic riverside town of St Ives. It invites families and friends to explore the town while solving clues and uncovering a dramatic theatre-themed mystery. Perfect for small groups, it combines sightseeing with puzzle-solving and an engaging storyline.

The story begins when actor Leo Hamm, chosen to play the lead in a new play called The Cromwell Diaries, is mysteriously found dead beneath a theatre trap door. As you follow the circular Trail starting at the Oliver Cromwell statue in Market Hill, you’ll explore the town centre and admire views over the River Ouse while solving clues placed on buildings, monuments and other permanent features. The Trail is around 2 miles long and takes about 2 hours to complete, is suitable for ages 6+, can be done at your own pace, includes a text message help service for clues, and all correct answers are entered into a monthly £100 prize draw.

The Treasure Trail costs £9.99 per Trail, which covers the whole group playing together. The same Trail can also be used for birthday parties, working best in small teams of around 4–5 people, with adult support recommended for younger children.

Overall, The St Ives Treasure Trail offers a fun and interactive way to discover the town while solving a mystery. Its combination of storytelling, clue-solving and sightseeing makes it ideal for families, friends and visitors. It’s an engaging and affordable outdoor activity for anyone exploring St Ives.

Features

Whodunit in St Ives: A Detective Mystery Trail

  • It was an interesting choice by all accounts when theatre producer Putona Show cast actor Leo Hamm as the lead in her new play, The Cromwell Diaries.
  • Several notable actors auditioned, but for reasons she continues to keep to herself, Putona picked novice actor Leo, despite his only previous acting experience being as the back end of a pantomime horse.
  • The theatre company was up in arms, accusing Putona of turning Cromwell into a pantomime dame. So perhaps it was no surprise when Leo was found under the trap door having uttered his last line.
  • But WHO would go so far as to crush poor Leo's dreams? And which prop did they use to finish him off?

Birthday Party Details

Want a birthday that’s actually fun (and doesn’t involve everyone just sitting around)? A Treasure Trail is an easy, ready-to-go adventure that gets people outside, exploring and laughing together. Our pre-written Trails are suitable for children and adults aged 6+, and work best in small teams of around 4–5 people. Everyone follows the route, cracks the clues, and solves the mystery as they go.

How a Treasure Trail birthday works

  • Pick a location (choose somewhere local, or make it part of a day out).
  • Split into teams (4–5 per team works best).
  • Set the mission (a quick briefing + team names instantly boosts excitement).
  • Start times (stagger teams by 2–5 minutes to avoid copying).
  • Finish with prizes (more on that below!).

Children’s birthday parties: what to know

  • We get asked a lot whether Trails work for children’s parties.
  • Standard Trails are designed for ages 6+, but at that age they’re best enjoyed as a family group or mixed adult/child team, because the directions and clue-solving usually need grown-up support.
  • If you’ve got 20 energetic 6-year-olds and one adult, a standard Trail probably isn’t the right fit.
  • For older children (often 9/10+, depending on the group), small teams can work really well, but they’ll still need adult supervision, especially near roads and crossings.

Ready to plan your birthday Trail?

  • Pick a location, choose your Trail, and you’re good to go.
  • If you’d like help choosing a Trail that suits your group size, ages, and timings, get in touch and we’ll point you in the right direction.
