Description

The Lyme Regis Treasure Trail is a self-guided treasure hunt adventure set in the historic seaside town of Lyme Regis. This interactive walking Trail lets families and friends explore the town while solving clues hidden along the route. It provides a fun way to discover the harbour, gardens and historic landmarks while following an exciting pirate-themed quest.

The story centres on the legend of pirate Spike Barnacle, who retired to Lyme Regis in 1718 after years of sailing the seas. Before disappearing mysteriously, he buried a hoard of gold and jewels on Chick Island and left behind a weathered treasure map filled with cryptic clues. As brave explorers, your mission is to follow Spike’s clues through Lyme Regis and uncover the location of his long-lost pirate treasure. Participants solve clues hidden on buildings, monuments and permanent features while exploring areas such as The Cobb, the harbour and surrounding gardens.

The Trail costs £9.99 GBP per Trail, with one booklet recommended for a group of 4 to 5 people. Treasure Trail birthday parties are also available, where small teams follow the route, crack clues and complete the adventure together, with adult supervision recommended for younger participants.

The Lyme Regis Treasure Trail is a creative way to explore the town while enjoying a fun outdoor challenge. It combines sightseeing, storytelling and puzzle-solving to create a memorable adventure for families, friends and visitors. Perfect for all ages, it turns a simple walk around Lyme Regis into an exciting pirate treasure hunt experience.

Features

Spike Me Barnacles, There's Treasure to Uncover!

  • In 1718, notorious pirate Spike Barnacle retired to Lyme Regis at the venerable age of 55, his pirate days behind him and a hoard of gold stashed away as his hard-earned pension.
  • Ever the cautious sort, Spike buried his treasure on Chick Island, just off the Dorset coast, trusting no one - not even his loyal crew! To celebrate his retirement, the crew threw him a raucous party.
  • But as the revelry faded, Spike vanished without a trace. All he left behind was a weathered map and a cryptic series of clues tucked inside his old pirate trunk. Generations passed, and his secret remained hidden… until now.
  • One of Spike's distant descendants, a great-great-great (times six!) grandchild, has come forward with a request for help.
  • They're calling on YOU, the bravest explorers, to dust off your compass, sharpen your wits, and decipher Spike's clues to uncover his legendary lost treasure. Shiver me timbers… adventure awaits!

  • The pieces of eight are just waiting to be unearthed… In 1718, at the ripe old salty pirate age of 55, Spike Barnacle retired to his home port of Lyme Regis. He buried his pension fund - a hoard of gold and jewels - on Chick Island, just off the Dorset coast.
  • Then, Spike mysteriously disappeared, leaving a treasure map tucked away in his old pirate trunk at home. Can YOU brush up on your pirate lingo and follow Spike's clues to track down the treasure trove?

Birthday Party Details

Want a birthday that’s actually fun (and doesn’t involve everyone just sitting around)? A Treasure Trail is an easy, ready-to-go adventure that gets people outside, exploring and laughing together. Our pre-written Trails are suitable for children and adults aged 6+, and work best in small teams of around 4–5 people. Everyone follows the route, cracks the clues, and solves the mystery as they go.

How a Treasure Trail birthday works

  • Pick a location (choose somewhere local, or make it part of a day out).
  • Split into teams (4–5 per team works best).
  • Set the mission (a quick briefing + team names instantly boosts excitement).
  • Start times (stagger teams by 2–5 minutes to avoid copying).
  • Finish with prizes (more on that below!).

Children’s birthday parties: what to know

  • We get asked a lot whether Trails work for children’s parties.
  • Standard Trails are designed for ages 6+, but at that age they’re best enjoyed as a family group or mixed adult/child team, because the directions and clue-solving usually need grown-up support.
  • If you’ve got 20 energetic 6-year-olds and one adult, a standard Trail probably isn’t the right fit.
  • For older children (often 9/10+, depending on the group), small teams can work really well, but they’ll still need adult supervision, especially near roads and crossings.

Ready to plan your birthday Trail?

  • Pick a location, choose your Trail, and you’re good to go.
  • If you’d like help choosing a Trail that suits your group size, ages, and timings, get in touch and we’ll point you in the right direction.

Visit the website for more information.

You can start your Trail whenever you like, as they are completely self-guided. Everything you need to complete your Trail is in the booklet, including directions and clues to guide you along the route.
