Description

Welcome to Llanberis Lake Railway, most of our passengers begin their journey at either Gilfach Ddu station, in Padarn Country Park or at Llanberis Station, now that the line has been extended. As it’s been our traditional terminus, we’ll start the journey at Gilfach Ddu.

Our little steam engines take you on a five-mile return journey alongside Lake Padarn, right in the heart of Snowdonia. The journey takes you past the 13th century Dolbadarn Castle, across possibly Britain's shortest river and past Llanberis' twin lakes. From Llanberis the train runs non-stop through the Padarn Country Park, joining the 1845 slate railway route to run along the shores of Lake Padarn to Penllyn, and giving stunning views of Snowdon, the highest peak in England and Wales.

The Llanberis Lake Railway with its deep-rooted history in the area is one of several great attractions in Llanberis, the lakeside village at the foot of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon). There’s so much to see and do, and there’s something for everyone.
World Heritage Sites are part of an exclusive network recognised by UNESCO as the best on earth. They show crucial moments in human endeavour which changed the world for ever, so why not make a day of it and visit The National Slate Museum and The Old Quarry Hospital which are part of the Llechi Cymru Wales Slate World Heritage Site showcasing the history of the once thriving slate industry in this area.The story of slate is an ongoing one that has left its mark on the landscape, towns, villages and the world. This special place still bears the marks of the industry that roofed the world. The innovation and technology made it a world class industry and have ensured its place in world history.
Another part of the Eryri landscape would be Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon), at 1085 meters or 3560 feet this makes it the highest peak in England and Wales. Please make sure you are well prepared if you are thinking of taking on this magnificent landmark by visiting www.visitsnowdonia.info with plenty of guidance about taking on the mountain and much more information about the different routes up, weather conditions and so on. There is also the Snowdon Mountain Railway which would take you up Yr Wyddfa with some awe-inspiring views. Booking in advance is essential.
If you are one for adventure, but not quite ready for the Highest Peak of Yr Wyddfa, why not pay a visit to Boulder Adventures or Ropeworks Active or even the Vivian Diving Centre, situated around Padarn Country Park and Padarn Lake for Kayaking, Canoeing, Rock climbing and Abseiling, Ropes courses or underground adventures, coasteering, Diving and much more.

Car: Motorists are advised to drive down to Padarn and board the train at our main station, Gilfach Ddu, as there is much more room to park here than in the village, which may be congested.
Bus: A network of connection bus services to get you around Eryri - www.sherparwyddfa.wales.
Train: Bangor (12 miles), bus S2 stops at the Llanberis Interchange directly outside our Llanberis Station. Porthmadog (22 miles), Sherpa’r Wyddfa bus S4 stops outside our Llanberis Station (10 minute walk to Gilfach Ddu Station). Betws y Coed (15 miles), Snowdon Sherpa bus S1 stops at Maes Padarn Bus stop, opposite our Llanberis Station (10 minute walk to Gilfach Ddu Station).
