The Bakewell Treasure Trail
8.21 miles
The Eyam Treasure Trail is a self-guided treasure hunt adventure set in the historic “plague village” of Eyam in the Peak District. It invites families and friends to explore the village while solving clues and searching for long-lost hidden treasures. Perfect for small groups, it combines local history, sightseeing, and puzzle-solving in an engaging outdoor activity.
The story is based on the events of 1665, when villagers hid their valuables during the plague but the secret of their location was lost after the guardian of the treasure died. Participants follow a 1.8-mile trail starting near the museum, exploring Eyam’s historic sites including the church, boundary stone, scenic viewpoints and village square while solving clues along the route. The self-guided trail can be completed at your own pace and usually takes around 2 hours, includes a mobile text service for clue help, and all correct answers are entered into a monthly £100 prize draw.
The Treasure Trail costs £9.99 per Trail, which covers the whole group playing together. The same Trail can also be used for birthday parties, working best in small teams of around 4–5 people, with adult support recommended for younger children.
Overall, The Eyam Treasure Trail offers a fun and interactive way to discover the village’s fascinating history. Its mix of storytelling, clue-solving and exploration makes it ideal for families, friends and visitors. It is an engaging and affordable outdoor activity for anyone exploring the Peak District.
