Swanage Railway is a rebuilt heritage railway in the Isle of Purbeck, offering a classic steam and diesel train experience along Dorset’s Jurassic Coast. Running through beautiful countryside, it connects Norden, Corfe Castle, and the Victorian seaside town of Swanage. It’s a popular family-friendly attraction and a relaxing way to explore the local area.

Visitors can enjoy full-size steam and diesel train journeys along 5.5 miles of track between Norden, Corfe Castle, Harman’s Cross, Herston Halt, and Swanage. Highlights include the Sea Train Adventure, access to Corfe Castle village, free entry to the Purbeck Mining Museum, station buffets and picnic areas, a station shop at Swanage, and special experiences such as cream tea trains, footplate experiences, railway photography days, and seasonal events. The railway also provides an easy way to reach local events, beaches, and villages across Purbeck.

Day Rover tickets cost £27.50 for adults, £14.00 for children (5–15), and £77.50 for family tickets (2+3 or 1+4), with under-5s free. Full Line Single tickets cost £14.00 for adults and £7.50 for children, while Short Hop tickets cost £7.00 for adults and £4.00 for children, with dogs and carers travelling free. Annual Season Tickets are £149 for adults and £74.50 for children.

  • Sea Train Adventure: A relaxing cruise around the eastern tip of the Jurassic Coast with live commentary arriving at the Victorian seaside resort of Swanage, where you will disembark at Swanage Pier, one of only 14 remaining timber piers in the country. Here you can explore the town's unique stores or grab a bite to eat before making your way to the railway station. Take a step back to 1885 as you board the steam train from Swanage to Corfe or Norden, both stops offering free museums. You can also explore the ruins of Corfe Castle or enjoy the sights from one of the old pubs in the village.
  • Purbeck Mining Museum: The Purbeck Mining Museum is dedicated to the history and heritage of Purbeck Ball Clay mining and its industrial narrow gauge railways. Visit us to find out more about the history of clay mining in Purbeck and learn about the experience of miners and their families.  You can also experience what it was like inside a typical Purbeck clay mine.   • By Car: The council operate an award winning ample 350 space car park at Purbeck Park (next to Norden Station) situated adjacent to the A351 Wareham to Swanage main road. This is ideally placed to form the starting point to explore Corfe Castle, Swanage and Purbeck Park, which has its very own Swanage Railway station at Norden.
  • By Bus: morebus run regular services to/from Swanage. All busses run to/from Swanage Railway station forecourt giving excellent access to our Ticket Office, Shop, Catering outlet and Trains.
  • By Train: The nearest National Rail station is Wareham, which is served by a half hourly service from London, Southampton, Bournemouth, Poole and Weymouth. Trains are operated by South Western Railway.
  • By Water/Boat: Swanage has its own restored pier. Why not sail to Swanage, it is a short walk along the main Station Road shopping area to our station and use the railway to steam to Corfe Castle, or explore the area from Harman’s Cross?
