St Augustine's Abbey founded in AD 598 by St Augustine himself, this once-great abbey proclaims the rebirth of Christianity in southern England. It’s a must-see for anyone visiting the Canterbury World Heritage Site.

Augustine, a missionary from Rome, baptised the pagan King Ethelbert of Kent, the most powerful Anglo-Saxon monarch and the first to convert to Christianity. To mark his conversion, Ethelbert gave Augustine land to build this very first monastery in Anglo-Saxon England. The site museum traces how the Saxon monastery was magnificently rebuilt by the Normans before becoming a Tudor royal palace.

Browse the Museum: Discover finds unearthed during archaeological work at this former burial place for the Anglo Saxon Kings of Kent. The museum at St Augustine’s Abbey contains artefacts and stone carvings found at the Abbey during excavations.

Gardens: The ruins of the abbey and its buildings are set in peaceful grounds. There’s plenty of room for children to explore but please be aware that the ruins are hazardous with some sheer drops. Please do not climb on the ruins. No ball games allowed.

Food And Drink: The gift shop sells a variety of hot and cold drinks, snacks, sweets and ice creams.
Toilets: Male, female and disabled toilets are situated inside the museum.
Dogs: Dogs on leads are welcome in the Abbey Grounds.
