South Eryri (Snowdonia) bordered by the beautiful Dwyryd and Dyfi estuaries, the mountains of south Snowdonia include some of Wales' most fascinating National Trust places It is here that the roots of the Trust took hold, with the acquisition in 1895 of Dinas Oleu. 

Separated by the dramatic Mawddach estuary, the mountain ranges of Cader Idris and the Rhinogydd dominate the scenery and the area's coastline includes some of the most ecologically important sand dunes in the British Isles. 

The area is a stronghold of the Welsh language and culture and is extremely rich in prehistoric and medieval archaeology. If you’re looking for the best place to visit with family and kids, this is a perfect choice for a fun and relaxing day out.

Top trails: 

  • Dolmelynllyn Estate walk: Walk alongside the cascading Rhaeadr Ddu Falls – an inspiration to generations of artists and writers – on this scenic circular route, and make sure to see the fascinating remains of the Cefn Coch gold mine.
  • Rhaeadr Ddu and Coed Ganllwyd walk: This is a great circular waterside walk in South Eryri (Snowdonia), taking you alongside the turbulent River Gamlan and past the magnificent Rhaeadr Ddu waterfalls. They look different every time you visit, depending on rainfall, weather and light.
  • Dinas Oleu walk, Barmouth: This circular walk takes you from Barmouth town centre through the steep winding streets of the Old Town and to the top of the gorse-covered hill known as Dinas Oleu (Citadel of Light). As you ascend, dramatic views over the Mawddach Estuary and Cardigan Bay - stretching towards the Llyn Peninsula - unfold. The walk is rich in history, taking in the first area of land donated to the National Trust in 1895.
  • Ornamental Lake walk, Dolmelynllyn: Enjoy a short circular walk around this ornamental lake with viewing platforms extending out over the lake edge. It's a fantastic place to watch wildlife and has been developed with accessibility in mind so is perfect for wheelchair users.

  • By road: Dolmelynllyn: Ganllwyd village can be found 4 miles north of the town of Dolgellau. The A470 which is the main north-south road through Wales divides the village. The car park is situated at the centre of the village and is sign posted. Cregennan: From Dolgellau centre take A493 towards Arthog. Follow B road 1 mile east of Arthog up steep winding road. Dinas Oleu: Barmouth is a coastal town situated on the A496. You will need to park in the town in one of the many car parks. The footpath is located along Dinas Oleu Rd, opposite The Original Factory Shop.
