Built in the 14th century by the powerful Neville family, it has a long history. Home to Cecily Neville, mother of two kings of England, it was also the scene of the plotting of the Rising of the North and a Parliamentary stronghold during the Civil War.
  • The Walled Gardens: Prepare for a place where heritage is celebrated, where the beauty lies in its simplicity, and where the welcome is always genuine. The 18th century Walled Garden has been recently remodelled by renowned garden designer Luciano Giubbilei with Lady Barnard. 
  • Deer Park: Spend time in the grounds of Raby Castle. With 200 acres to explore and a range of wildlife on our doorstep, there is plenty to see and do across Raby Park. Discover our walking routes and meet our herds of red and fallow deer.
  • The Plotters’ Forest: Nestled within a magical Christmas Tree Plantation at Raby Castle, The Plotters’ Forest is the perfect family adventure playground for children to experience the joys and benefits of outdoor play in County Durham through a variety of interactive games and activities.

  • Parking: There is plenty of parking available at Raby Castle. Please follow the signs on entry. Accessible spaces are marked within the bays. We have 12 EV charging points available on-site for visitors to use. You can either use the app ChargerPoint or pay as you go. The Castle is situated in 200 acres of undulating parkland in a countryside location.
  • Food & Drinks: The Vinery is fully accessible with both indoor and outdoor seating.
  • Toilets: There are two toilets but no accessible toilets inside the Castle, the main toilets and accessible toilets are at The Vinery Café, The Plotters’ Forest and within the Changing Places facility.

Events: 

  • Autumn Family Explorer: Family Explorer Tickets. An all inclusive ticket for the whole family. An all-inclusive day out for families. 
  • Castle, Deer Park and Gardens: Raby Castle, Park and Gardens is open 7 days a week with guided tours on Mondays and Tuesdays and both free flow and guided tours available Wednesday to Sunday. The Castle is open March until 2nd November 2025.

  • By Road: From the north, Raby Castle is located on the A688 approximately 8 miles north east of Barnard Castle. When travelling from the north, Raby can be reached via the A1(M) or the A68. From the A1(M) leave Junction 60. Travel along the A688 westbound towards West Auckland (where the A68 joins the north) and on towards Barnard Castle. Raby Castle is positioned on the right hand side.
  • By Bus: If travelling from Durham, Arriva bus service 6 runs from Durham, via Bishop Auckland to Cockfield every half an hour. Alight at Cockfield then transfer to bus 84 onto Raby Castle. Arriva Bus Service 75 travels between Darlington and Barnard Castle via Staindrop once every hour, alight at Staindrop then either walk (approx 1 mile) to Raby Castle or transfer to service 84 travelling to Bishop Auckland. Weardale Motor Services also runs.
  • By Train: Darlington Train Station, Bank Top, Darlington, DL1 4AA. Approx. 15 miles. Operating on the East Coast Main line, with connections to towns and cities across England.
