Built in 1391 by Sir Philip Courtenay, this Grade I listed fortress has been the Courtenay family's home for generations, blending medieval architecture with Victorian elegance.

  • Castle Tours: They offer unique tours every day, it’s a great way to really learn the history of the castle and the family. They are delivered by our friendly and extremely knowledgeable guides. Tours last between 45 minutes – 1 hour.
  • Explore the Castle: You don’t have to go around with a guide, we open much of the house for you to explore at your own pace. Whether you want to nip around quickly or spend time studying all the details. We have room stewards who can help with any questions, plus we’ve provided some information boards or highlighted particularly exciting objects from the collection.
  • Quests: What’s a trip to a Castle if you’re not completing a noble quest? We’ve produced a range of fun trails and activities suitable for all ages to complete as part of their experience in the castle, or out in the grounds. Stickers are available for those who manage to complete them during their visit. 
  • Nature Detective Bags: We’ve got new explorer bags this year, designed to help inquisitive minds explore the grounds. From bug hunting to crafts there’s a range of activities to keep children engaged. 
  • Castle and Woodland Gardens: Take your time to enjoy all our grounds have to offer. From the formal walk around the Rose Garden, to the rugged hill climb up to the Belvedere Tower. There’s over 150 acres of outdoor space to explore, walk the dogs or enjoy a picnic. 
  • Nature Backpacks: Our Children’s Nature Backpacks are now available for hire, equipped with everything young explorers need for outdoor adventures including a bug catching net, magnifying glass, bug inspector glass, and binoculars.
  • Walking Routes: Enjoy a scenic circular walking route through Powderham’s woodlands, leading to various spots of interest.

  • Nordic Walking Groups & Workshops: September 23 @ 11:30 am - 12:30 pm. Powderham Castle, We are delighted to have the Exe Nordic Walking groups out and about in the Castle grounds on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The friendly groups enjoy connecting with nature through the changing seasons. Taking time to look after their social, mental and physical wellbeing. The walk ends with refreshments at The Courtyard Cafe.

  • By Car: Powderham is easily accessible by car, just a few minutes from the M5 and A38. We offer free car parking on-site.
  • By Train: There is a direct service from Exeter St Davids to Starcross. Powderham is less than 2 miles from Starcross. You have the option of catching the bus from here. It would take about 30 minutes to walk.
  • By Bus: Take the No.2 Stagecoach bus from Exeter/Newton Abbot. The bus stop is right outside the entrance at the top of the drive. For latest timetables, please visit www.stagecoachbus.com
  • By Boat: Exmouth to Starcross. Topsham to Exminster. Topsham to Turf Locks.
  • By Cycling & Walking: There’s many scenic footpaths that lead to Powderham, and the Exe Estuary Cycle Trail (NCN2) allows you to ride along the Estuary and Deer Park until you reach our gates. We have bike racks at the Welcome Centre, and request that bikes aren’t used through the gardens.
  • Parking: Offer free car parking on-site.
