Overbeck's Garden is a hidden subtropical paradise set on the cliffs above Salcombe estuary in South Devon. This seasonal garden is filled with exotic and rare plants from around the world, offering colourful displays and peaceful sea views. Open between March and October, it provides a relaxing escape surrounded by nature and coastal scenery.

Visitors can explore terraced gardens packed with tropical plants from Brazil, New Zealand, the Canary Islands and South Africa, along with Mediterranean and temperate species. There are tranquil sea-view paths, the Nature Nook with activity sheets, the Banana Garden Silent Space, the Grand Bug Hotel insect habitat, and access to coastal walks towards Bolt Head and the South West Coast Path. Facilities include light refreshments at the Coach House Kiosk, picnic areas with baskets and blankets available, toilets, parking, and guided garden tours every Wednesday at 2pm (pre-booking essential).

Whole property tickets cost £13.20/£12.00 for adults (18+), £6.60/£6.00 for children (5–17, under 5s free), £33.00/£30.00 for a family (2 adults and up to 3 children), and £19.80/£18.00 for 1 adult and 2 children.

The garden opens seasonally between March and October. The surrounding landscape offers coastal walks to Bolt Head and beyond.

Facilities

  • Parking: The on-site car park uses a digital payment system via the JustPark app, property code 80638. We recommend setting up and downloading the app before your visit. Parking is free for members via the app. Ample parking at National Trust East Soar TQ7 3DR (1.2 mile farmland walk to Overbeck's).
  • Food & Drinks: Light refreshments, situated at the entrance to Overbeck's Garden in our Coach House Kiosk. 
  • Picnic Area: Picnic at the Coach House cafe courtyard or borrow a picnic basket and blanket from the courtyard and picnic in the garden
  • Toilets: Multi-user accessible toilet in the Coach House Cafe.Further ladies, gents, baby change and accessible toilets are within the garden.
  • Guided tour: Every Wednesday at 2pm with the garden team. Pre-booking essential.

  • Grand Bug Hotel: Discover the Grand Bug Hotel on the walk from East Soar to Ovebreck's Garden — a six-foot-tall insect habitat built by volunteers using natural materials from the Salcombe coast. Head Gardener Ian Trought explains “We're always looking for ways to encourage bio-diversity in the garden at Overbeck's. Garden wildlife needs a place to rest and raise the next generation.”  
  • Coast and countryside walks: Explore walking routes through the National Trust landscape at Salcombe with splendid views of coastline and countryside. Overbeck’s Garden is 1.2 miles from East Soar National Trust car park, and is within easy reach of the South West Coast Path at Sharpitor.

Take the ferry from Whitesands Quay, Salcombe to South Sands (seasonal), and walk about three quarters of a mile uphill following the brown signs to Overbeck's. Runs from Easter to the end of October
