  • Time Tunnel: Be transported through the centuries as you are taken through almost 200 years of mining history thanks to state-of-the-art technology. You will encounter digital characters of the past through exciting films, touch treasures of times gone by and be greeted by authentic sights, sounds and smells, all culminating with an unforgettable special effects finale.
  • Underground Tours: Every tour ‘darn pit’ is led by an ex-miner with a ‘reyt’ broad accent and loads of experience under his somewhat heavy tool belt. He’ll unhand you of your ‘contraband’, and talk you through 180 years of mining, explaining why he has every right to tell you to ‘shut tha’ trap’ and when you are ‘done and dusted’ you can carry on exploring life above ground.
  • Families: National Coal Mining Museum for England prides itself on being a fantastic, fun, affordable day out for all the family. With hands-on activities at every corner, no two visits are the same. With something for all ages – from grandparents to kids, toddlers to teens – discover how coal mining has always been a family affair with our immersive, authentic experiences.

  • Parking: There is ample car and coach parking including disabled parking space and parent and child spaces. Parking is free though donations are appreciated, and there are times throughout the year (summer holidays and special events) where there will be a charge. 
  • Food & Drinks: Our Café serves hot and cold food and drinks.
  • Dogs: Dogs are welcome on a lead in the outdoor grounds of the Museum. Only Assistance/Service dogs are permitted indoors.

  • By Bus: Bus services run within easy walking distance of the Museum. From Wakefield Bus Station or Huddersfield Bus Stations, the Arriva 232 bus stops at the Reindeer pub with a few minutes walk to the Museum.

  • By Bicycle: Bicycle racks are available by the Café entrance for visitors who would like to cycle to the Museum.
