Ludlow Castle, part of Powis Estates, is a partly ruined uninhabited medieval fortress in the town of the same name in the English county of Shropshire. It stands on an imposing high point overlooking the River Teme and in the Middle Ages was a crucial strategic stronghold for control of the Welsh Borders. At times it was the seat of English government in Wales.

  • The Earls of Powis began renting Ludlow Castle from the Crown in 1772, and bought the ruined structure in 1811. The castle has been passed down through the family since and is now owned by The Trustees of the Powis Castle Estate on behalf of the family.

Events:

  • Valuation day with BBC’s Kate Bliss: 20 Sep, 2025. Kate Bliss, a regular face on BBC antiques programmes and an independent jewellery and fine art valuer returns to Ludlow Castle for a free ‘drop-in’ Valuation Day for jewellery and silver as well as other antiques and contemporary fine art.
  • Pumpkin Trail and Games: 25 Oct, 2025-2 Nov, 2025. Bring the family for a fun-filled autumn adventure at the castle this October half-term! Follow the pumpkin-themed trail through the castle grounds. Can you spot the creature who calls the castle home?
  • Magical Meeting with Father Christmas: 6 Dec, 2025-23 Dec, 2025. Experience a magical meeting with Father Christmas in his grotto in the atmospheric ruins of Ludlow Castle. Each exclusive session with Father Christmas will give your little ones time to discuss their Christmas wishes, as well as have photos taken with the man himself (photos to be taken by family members).  The experience will be personalised;  Father Christmas will discuss your child’s interests and give an age-appropriate gift.

  • BY CAR: The Castle is in the heart of Ludlow. There is no parking at the castle, but the nearest public car park is just a minute’s walk away, with other car parks around 5 minutes away. Travelling from the north or south, Ludlow is to be found just off the A49. From the West Midlands, leave the M5 at Junction 3 and head west on the A456 through Kidderminster and Tenbury Wells to the A49. Turn right and follow signs for Ludlow.
  • BY TRAIN: Ludlow is on the Welsh Marches line with regular direct access from North Wales, Crewe and South Wales. The castle is approximately a quarter of a mile from the railway station.
  • BY BUS: Buses operated by Minsterley Motors run around Ludlow town (from the Park and Ride off the A49 Sheet roundabout), and from Shrewsbury, Pontesbury and Knighton. 
  • PARKING: A Park & Ride runs from the Eco Business Park just off the A49 Sheet roundabout Monday to Saturday
