Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre is a privately run museum set on a former WW2 Bomber Command airfield in East Kirkby. It offers a living history experience where visitors can explore wartime aviation and honour the sacrifices of Bomber Command personnel. The centre was created as a memorial and educational site, preserving history for future generations.

Visitors can see rare WW2 aircraft, including a running Lancaster and Mosquito, plus restoration projects and historic bombers. Exhibits include the hangar, original control tower, RAF Escape Museum, memorial chapel, Home Front displays, and restored RAF vehicles. Guests can enjoy Lancaster and Mosquito taxy rides, interior tours, restoration tours, experience days, exhibitions, a wartime NAAFI café, and even fly-in visits on special operating days.

Aircraft: The Centre is home to some of the rarest, most amazing and important aircraft of WW2. The only place in the World where you can experience a running Lancaster and Mosquito together, the Centre has a truly unique collection of WW2 aircraft.

  • The Hangar: The home of Avro Lancaster NX611 'Just Jane' and DH Mosquito HJ711. Walk within feet of the aircraft, watch the restoration work and take in the many personal stories.
  • The Control Tower: One of the main features to the museum is the Original Control Tower restored to show you what an operational tower would have been like.
  • RAF Escape Museum: We are very proud to hold the RAF Escaping Society collection, a tribute to all those who helped crashed airmen in occupied Europe.
  • Memorial Chapel: A sombre and peaceful place for quiet reflection, displaying the names of all 848 lost aircrew and ground crew from RAF East Kirby.
  • The Hampden Restoration & Early Bombers: The forgotten period of Bomber Command's history, plus the Handley Page Hampden restoration project and Vickers Wellington wings.
  • Home Front: Exhibits include the Home Guard, rationing, a wartime kitchen, the Land Army, evacuation, make do & mend, the Royal Observer Corps, ARP Wardens and a reconstruction of an Anderson shelter.

Vehicles: We have a variety of rare WW2 RAF vehicles at the Centre. We have dedicated many hours and resources into sourcing and restoring these important parts of Bomber Command's history.

  • Fuel Bowser: AEC Matador fuel bowser - A huge vehicle originally used to refuel heavy bombers on Bomber Command airfields.
  • Bedford OX & Queen Mary: A very rare unit originally used to move parts of aircraft from factories to airfields and to collect crash recovered aircraft.
  • Airfield Tractor: David Brown airfield tractor - A workhorse of the airfield used to tow aircraft and bomb trains.
  • Crew Bus: Fordson WOT1 crew bus The only one known in existence this is possibly the rarest item at the Centre, it was used to take crews to their aircraft ready for operations.
  • Foam Tender: Fordson WOT1 Foam Tender - The Fire vehicle of choice providing fire fighting foam to an aircraft crash. Another rare vehicle this particular one was used in the final scene of Memphis Belle.
  • ATC Caravan: ATC airfield control caravan - always present at the side of the runway to give the green light this is another rare item that has undergone extensive restoration.

The NAAFI: The NAAFI is a wartime building which is home to our admission desk, cafe and souvenir shop. The walls are filled with wartime photos and memorabillia for you to browse over as your enjoy one of our delicious speciality coffees or maybe treat yourself to a slice of cake. We also offer more substantial meals if you would like to have your lunch with us.

A Flying Visit: We welcome many visitors by air to the Centre as we open our grass landing strip for special operating days.  We give you the opportunity to fly in to an original wartime airfield and share the runway with some of our iconic aircraft both resident and visiting (PPR required)

  • Food & Drinks: Food and drink is available from our wartime NAAFI building, our cafe has a 5 star food hygiene rating.
  • Toilets: Toilets, a disabled toilet and baby change facilities are available free of charge.

What to see

Experience

  • ‘Just Jane’ Lancaster Standard Taxy Ride: Experience the sights, smells and sounds of our Avro Lancaster NX611 'Just Jane' from inside the aircraft - giving an authentic WW2 aviation experience like no other. The standard Lancaster taxy ride experience takes place on some Saturdays and Bank Holidays. On these days you book a time for your taxy ride, (there are usually three time options on each day) and we ask you to arrive at least an hour and forty five minutes before your riding time. You are welcome to come to spend the whole day at the Centre. This experience lasts around 45 minutes.
  • ‘Just Jane’ Lancaster VIP Taxy Ride: Experience a whole day with our Avro Lancaster NX611 'Just Jane', with two or more taxy runs, one to ride on and the other to watch. Includes a briefing, lunch and refreshments, giving a fantastic opportunity to discover all about this great aircraft. We offer special VIP days which are usually held mid week and are a whole day experience. The arrival time is 9am and the day starts with morning coffee and your briefing from the crew at 9.30am. 
  • Lancaster Winter Restoration Tour: Each winter we invite you to see our restoration work so that you can learn about the work we are doing and experience it from a unique angle. Each winter we offer the opportunity to come and see our restoration work up close so that you can learn about the work we are doing and experience it from a unique angle.  You will be given a restoration talk/tour and the experience usually lasts around 1 hour.
  • 'Just Jane’ Lancaster Interior Tours: Get up close and personal with Avro Lancaster NX611 Just Jane. Enjoy a tour inside the Lancaster giving you the opportunity to sit in all of the different crew positions on board the aircraft and ask any questions of the experienced and knowledgeable tour guide. The interior tour lasts for around 30 to 40 minutes and allows you to experience the Lancaster up close and personal while also giving you a much better understanding of the environment the crews were operating in during the second world war. 
  • Mosquito HJ711 Taxy Ride Experience: On our tail down taxy rides you enjoy the only chance in Europe to be inside a Mosquito with both Merlins running. We place guests enjoying a ride in the navigators position beside the pilot. The sound of the 2 Merlins alone has a profound effect on any one who is the least bit interested in the Second World War. The whole experience lasts 30 minutes, with the taxy run itself lasting around 15 minutes and a tour around the equipment in the cockpit. Each guest has a certificate to take home signed by the pilot.
  • Mosquito HJ711 Experience Day: We offer special experience days which are usually held mid-week and are a whole day experience and limited to an exclusive party. The day starts at 10.00am with arrivals and a briefing from a crew member/the day's co-ordinator. The day enables you to get a personal experience with HJ711 experiencing her up close for a photographic opportunity, viewing of an engine run and the chance to look into the cockpit from the crew ladder.
