  • River Cottage (Self-Catering Holiday): River Cottage, located on Iken Cliff in Suffolk, overlooks the beautiful Alde estuary and offers accommodation for up to four guests in two bedrooms. It is just one mile downstream from Snape Maltings and a few miles from Aldeburgh, with easy access to Thorpeness, Southwold, Walberswick, and Dunwich. Wildlife enthusiasts can enjoy birdwatching for avocet and other waders, as well as spotting seals and occasional otters. The cottage features an entrance hall for coats and boots, an open-plan living room and kitchen 
  • River View B&B: River View B&B sits on the southern bank of the Alde estuary at Iken Cliff and offers a minimum two-night stay for up to two guests in one or two bedrooms. Located one mile from Snape Maltings and 15 minutes from Aldeburgh, it is also within easy reach of Thorpeness, Southwold, Walberswick, and Dunwich. Guests can enjoy abundant birdlife and seals along the estuary. 
  • Canadian Canoe Hire: Iken Canoe offers Canadian canoes for 2–3 people, with a maximum of four when including two small children (7–11 years) and two adults. Buoyancy aids, paddles, and dry bags are provided, along with a full safety briefing, map, and route suggestions. Canoes cannot be launched by guests themselves. The typical route includes paddling to Snape Bridge, 1.7 miles upstream, and back, taking around 2 hours. The River Alde is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), home to avocet, curlew, godwit, redshank, marsh harrier, and seals. Safety rules require wearing buoyancy aids at all times, adult supervision for under-18s, no children under 7, no solo paddlers, and avoiding alcohol before or during hire. Hire may be postponed in unsuitable conditions.
  • Iken Sail: ‘Iken Sail’ provides the opportunity to charter a gaff-rigged Cornish Shrimper 19 for up to four competent sailors. The boat measures 22’ 6” with bowsprit and is available for half or full-day charters within the estuary. Dogs are not permitted on board.

Directions to Iken Cliff Picnic Site & Boatshed

  • From Snape, go through the village and over Snape Bridge (Snape Maltings and the Plough & Sail pub on your left).
  • Immediately fork left on the B1084 towards Iken and Orford.
  • One mile later, turn left at the crossroads signed to Iken.
  • Take the first turning on the left to the Iken picnic site. Keep left and pass under the 6'7" vehicle height restriction barrier.
  • Max height sign indicates the turn for Iken Cliff picnic site/carpark.
  • If coming from the South (A12) or West, cross the A12 bridge at Wickham Market, follow signs to Campsea Ashe and then Tunstall.
  • From Tunstall, follow signs to Snape, but turn off right (signed to Iken) 1 mile before Snape. Drive through the forest to the give-way sign at the Iken crossroads. Go straight on and follow instructions above.
  • Sat nav postcode: IP12 2EN (may take you past the picnic site turn; follow the directions above when near).
  • Parking: Near the bottom right corner of the picnic site; do not leave valuables in the car.
  • Walk to boatshed: Start along the footpath at the bottom right of the car park, after approx. 120m head downhill towards the river (not uphill to the right), keeping Jumbo's Cottage on your right. The green boatshed is below the cliff further along the footpath.
