Based in the north of Norwich, Highball is Norfolk’s largest and oldest indoor climbing facility, dedicated exclusively to bouldering. Built by climbers for climbers, Highball offers a welcoming and friendly environment for everyone from absolute beginners to seasoned crushers. Whether you’re stepping onto the wall for the first time or pushing your limits, you’ll find everything you need to challenge yourself, improve your skills. The centre offers a variety of activities tailored for all ages including introductory courses like Intro to Bouldering, social climbing sessions for teens, private coaching, and group sessions for kids starting from age six. Teenagers can join casual Teen Social sessions or complete their own Intro to Bouldering course to climb independently. Features

Adult Climbing

  • Intro to Bouldering: This introductory session is ideal for anyone aged 14 and above who is new to climbing. It covers the essential safety rules, how to use the centre, and gives you the confidence to start climbing independently. Sessions run on weekdays and weekends and last for one hour, with the option to continue climbing afterwards.
  • Intro to Board Climbing: Tailored for experienced climbers looking to explore board training, this small group session introduces key footwork drills, grip types, and movement strategies specific to board climbing. Participants learn how to set problems, manage progression, and avoid injury through effective warm-up techniques. The session runs fortnightly on Tuesday evenings, with a maximum of four participants, and includes a guided warm-up.
  • Workshop Wednesdays: These themed workshops focus on specific skills such as footwork or fear management. Led by experienced coaches, each session provides practical tips and individual feedback to help you move past plateaus or develop key techniques. Held fortnightly on Wednesday evenings, these sessions 
  • Private Coaching: For those seeking a tailored learning experience, private coaching offers one-on-one instruction with a dedicated coach. Designed for competent boulderers aged 14 and over, sessions focus on individual goals and can be arranged based on availability and personal preference.

Teen Climbing

  • Teen Social: It offers the chance to climb alongside others in the same age group in a welcoming environment. A Highball coach is available during the session to offer tips and advice. Sessions run every Friday evening from 6:30pm to 9:30pm, and climbers can arrive or leave at any time. 
  • Teen Intro to Bouldering: For those not yet signed off for independent climbing, this one-hour session is the first step. Run during the first hour of Teen Social, it introduces all the essentials of safe bouldering and centre use. After completing the session, climbers under 16 can be signed off by a parent or guardian following a short briefing. This session is open to teenagers aged 14 and up.
  • Climbing by Age: Teen Access Guidelines
    • Ages 12 to 13: Can climb under the supervision of a competent adult or attend a supervised session with a Highball instructor. Written parental consent is required, but a parent or guardian does not need to remain on-site.
    • Ages 14 to 15: Can climb independently after completing an Intro to Bouldering session and demonstrating safe behaviour. Parents or guardians are invited to a briefing to complete the sign-off process.
    • Ages 16 to 17: May participate in adult classes and sessions. Once signed off, they can climb without supervision.

Kid’s Climbing

  • Intro to Junior Coaching Club: This six-week programme is the entry point into our Junior Coaching Club. Instructors assess each child’s climbing ability and work with families to determine the best ongoing coaching pathway. 
  • Highball Play: Designed for fun and confidence-building, Highball Play is a relaxed, instructor-led bouldering session for children aged 6 to 10. Each session includes warm-up games followed by time on the climbing wall. These drop-in sessions are held on Saturdays and Sundays and are suitable for both beginners and returning climbers. Please note that this is a bouldering-only session and does not include any auto belays.
  • Private Sessions: Perfect for families or small groups, private sessions offer a guided introduction to bouldering with a dedicated instructor. These sessions can be adapted to suit different ages and abilities and are open to children aged 6 and over. Adults are welcome to join, and sessions are available on both weekdays and weekends.
  • Bouldering School: Offered during school holidays, this two-day course introduces children to the core skills of bouldering. Topics include technique, safety, wall etiquette, and common climbing terms. Sessions are delivered in small groups and are suitable for children aged 8 to 13.
  • Home Education Sessions: Home Ed sessions are designed for small groups and follow the NICAS Bouldering framework. These structured classes are instructor-led and run over six weeks. If you have a group of four to six children aged 8 to 13, sessions can be arranged based on mutual availability. Individuals can also join the waiting list to be placed in an upcoming group.

    • The nearest bus stop is on Drayton Road, less than a 5-minute walk from the centre. Regular services run to and from the city centre, with the Yellow Line serving the area.
    • For those travelling from further afield, Norwich Train Station is approximately 4 miles away, on the edge of the city centre. Train travel can be combined with a bus journey or bring a bike on board and cycle the rest of the way.
