Herstmonceux Castle, Unique visitor attraction with over 600 acres of woodland, wildflower meadows, and gardens. Also serving as a college and international study centre. The south west gatehouse and adjacent elevation is currently undergoing restoration works.

Herstmonceux Castle is rich in history dating back to the 15th Century, commissioned by Sir Roger Fiennes, Treasurer to the Household of Henry VI. The moated castle was purchased and then gifted to Queen’s University, Canada by industrialist and philanthropist Alfred Bader and his wife Isabel. And Garden Delights With eight curated and themed gardens, including there is an abundance of life to delight the senses.

Features

Family Fun: A fun and relaxing day out, young imaginations will love the woodland. Can you find the big chestnut tree struck by lightening. Play area- Little ones can enjoy our play area located just behind the Castle Cafe and Terrace, an ideal location to have a picnic. Rope maze- On the opposite side to the play area is the Marlow Rope Maze. Don't be fooled by the simple rope format, being able to see through to the other side makes things very tricky! wildflower meadows and grounds are a haven for wildlife. Why not try our Nature Spotter's Bingo game and see how many you can spot? If your children love being in nature and making things then why not book a place on one of our Nature Maker Sessions where you can craft, create and connect with the outdoors. Read about when these sessions are on our What's On page and you can then pick and book you session.

Facilities

Food & Drinks: The Castle Café and Terrace provides fantastic coffee and cake, but why not enjoy a glass of wine on the terrace with the castle as your backdrop?

  • The Baronet and his Architect – Presented by Dr Steven Bednarski: Thursday 9th October. Step into the past at Herstmonceux Castle for an unmissable afternoon with Professor Steven Bednarski, the world’s foremost historian on this iconic estate.
  • Sip and Sketch with Tom Middleton: 1st November 2025 3-5pm. A glass of rich, velvety wine in one hand, a pencil in the other. The hum of conversation, the thrill of creation. This is Sip & Sketch. Guided by Tom Middleton—a two-time Wildlife Artist of the Year category winner—you’ll step into a world where art and atmosphere collide. Forget the rules. Forget perfection. Just sip, sketch, and connect.
