Features

  • Nestled in the 'green belt' of Surrey, the Great Cockcrow Railway provides a very unique experience. Open every Sunday throughout the summer months (May to October), the railway allows you to be transported back to the days of steam and the world of miniature - 7¼ inches to be precise.
  • The GCR is truly a special place for both enthusiasts and families alike. Featuring a wide range of locomotives (both steam and instant start) and a fully working signalling system. All of this operated by a team of volunteers who give their time and expertise to provide a family fun day out.

Facilities

  • Parking: Car parking at the railway is free of charge.
  • Food & Drinks: Nestled within the charming grounds of The Great Cockcrow Railway in Chertsey, The Station Café is an inviting, family-friendly café. As part of the railway’s experience, we take great pride in offering a warm and welcoming atmosphere, perfect for families, friends and railway enthusiasts alike.

What to see

At the GCR we have two different routes that you can take whilst visiting the railway. Both routes have equal ride lengths of 1¼ miles and will take about the same amount of time (approx. 20 minutes). However, they do take in different elements of the railway, whilst weaving themselves in and out throughout the whole journey.

  • Red Route: The 'Red' route heads out of Hardwick station and takes the mainline down towards Philips bridge junction and on to Everglades Junction. Heading down the branch you will find yourself taking the viaduct over the track that you have just travelled on. The viaduct takes you on to Cockcrow Hill where your train will stop to allow the engine to change ends. After a short stop, you will head back towards Hardwick via the Greywood tunnel. Passing through Everglades for your second time, you will then travel through Meadowside, take a left turn, head up the spur, and visit the animals at Jungle Halt. It's now full steam ahead back to Hardwick Central.
  • Green Route: Heading from Hardwick Central Station, you will take a very sharp left to head along the Down North Hardwick line (aka the Jubilee line) and travel toward Lesters Crossing - our only working level crossing on the railway. After the crossing, you will start turning back toward the mainline and Everglades Junction. Travelling over the viaduct, you will soon find yourself at Cockcrow Hill, where you will travel straight through the station and out to Green Lane. Green Lane is the furthest point on the railway, and you will start making your way back to Hardwick via Greywood Tunnel and Meadowside line.
