Cliffe House is a Grade II listed Victorian house set within eleven acres of mature woodland in Huddersfield. Originally built by the Senior family, it is now an outdoor centre focused on learning, adventure and events. It welcomes thousands of children each year for residential stays and educational visits, along with family-friendly activities.

Visitors can enjoy a range of activities including a family fun trail with hidden clues, woodland walks, orienteering, and an adventure playground. Seasonal school holiday activities include archery, climbing wall, bushcraft, tree climbing, crate stacking and a mine experience. The venue also hosts events and offers spaces for celebrations, conferences and meetings within its historic rooms.

Entry to the grounds and adventure playground is typically free, while some activities like the family fun trail cost £2 and other activities or facility rentals have set costs.

  • Set within eleven acres of mature woodland, Cliffe House is a Grade II listed Victorian House built by the Senior family, who set up the local Sovereign brewery.
  • Since 1948 it has been used as an outdoor centre for children, first from the Dewsbury area and then from the Kirklees District. It has since developed into a centre of excellence for adventures, events and conferences.
  • Around 6,000 children from all over Kirklees arrive at Cliffe House each year to experience a residential stay varying in length from one to four nights or an educational day visit with our outdoor learning team.
  • They leave having learned a lot about the environment - and themselves - with memories that last a lifetime. We have a range of events that take place year-round, mainly during the school holidays, to help bring you and your family closer to nature.

  • Food & Drinks: The in-house catering team can offer a range of food options to suit all tastes and dietary requirements, from light bites to set menus featuring traditional sandwiches to local delicacies with a twist like Yorkshire pudding wraps - get in contact with the team for more information on menu offer.

What to see

Activities

  • Family fun trail: Walk around our beautiful woodland finding hidden clues. When you have completed the challenge collect your treat from the food kiosk in the playground. This activity is available for a small charge (£2). You can turn up on the day or book online.
  • Adventure playground: Run, swing or jump off some steam on our fantastic playground - free to enter. Temporarily Closed for Maintenance and Repairs, please contact us to check on update
  • Woodland walk: Enjoy a leisurely stroll or run around our 13 acres of beautiful woodland - free access.
  • Orienteering: Pick up a map from the food kiosk and make your way around the woodland finding the hidden locations, making sure you stamp your map when you find each point. This activity is available for a small charge.
  • School holiday activities: We offer a range of activities during the school holidays including: Archery, Climbing wall, Bushcraft, Tree climbing and crate stacking, Mine experience, Activity days - coming soon.

Hire one, two, three or all four, of our stunning rooms here at Cliffe House for your celebration.

Available to hire for all types of life celebration events such as birthdays and anniversaries, each of our four rooms showcase some of the original features of this 19th century country mansion. The boardroom, lounge, dining room and billiards room all have their own unique appeal, each offering something slightly different.

Billiards room

  • Light and airy this room is suitable for a variety of layouts and functions with direct access to part of Cliffe House's grounds, perfect for some blue sky thinking.
  • There are two seating options:
  • Theatre style with 50 seats.
  • Listening circles with 25 seats.
  • Half day: £150.
  • Full day: £300.

Boardroom

  • A more formal setting, this room comes with the traditional boardroom style table to thrash out those all important agenda items. 
  • Offering lots of natural light, this room offers a different perspective of the Cliffe House grounds.
  • There are two seating options:
  • Boardroom style with 12 seats.
  • Theatre style with 25 seats.
  • Half day: £150.
  • Full day: £300.

The lounge

  • Offering a more casual vibe, The Lounge provides a more intimate space ideal for informal meetings or breakouts.
  • There are four seating options:
  • A meeting table.
  • A listening circle.
  • A breakout room all with 6 seats.
  • A desk/docking station with 1 seat.
  • Half day: £100.
  • Full day: £200.
