Christchurch Park is a historic 33-hectare park in the centre of Ipswich, known for its beautiful landscapes, mature trees and rich heritage. Opened in 1895, it was the town’s first public park and remains one of its most popular green spaces. With open lawns, woodland and ponds, it offers a peaceful setting for visitors of all ages. 

The park features a wide range of attractions including a children’s play area, tennis courts, table tennis, outdoor chess and a popular 5km Park Run route. Visitors can also explore the dedicated arboretum, admire hundreds of ancient trees including a 600-year-old yew tree, and visit the historic Christchurch Mansion with its tea room and gift shop. There are also refreshment kiosks, a visitor centre and plenty of open space for walking and picnics. 

Entry to Christchurch Park is completely free, making it an excellent choice for an affordable day out.

  • Christchurch Park was the first public park in Ipswich, opening in 1895. It extends over 33 hectares of picturesque grounds right in the heart of the town. Christchurch Park is a designated County Wildlife Site and is located in one of Ipswich's conservation areas.
  • It is on the English Heritage register of historic parks and gardens of special historic interest. Christchurch Park, a prime example of traditional parkland habitat, contains a mosaic of amenity grassland, scattered mature trees, tree lined avenues, long grass, woodland, wetland flush and ponds.
  • The park is known for its abundance of veteran trees, the oaks and sweet chestnuts in Christchurch Park are particularly important as some of them are 300 - 400 years old. However, the oldest tree in the park is the Ancient Yew Tree, near to the Cenotaph, which is over 600 years old!
  • The park also contains the town’s only dedicated Arboretum which contain a number of interesting specimen trees from around the world. In a full tree survey of the park, completed before the park’s Heritage Lottery Project, it was recorded that the park contains over 4000 trees!
