Welcome to Chiltern Open Air Museum located near Chalfont St Peter and Chalfont St. Where history comes to life in a picturesque 45-acre setting. Immerse yourself in the past as you explore over 30 reconstructed historic buildings and a working farm. From charming cottages to rustic barns, each structure tells a unique story of rural life in the Chilterns.

  • Fun Family Activities Every Day: Wander along our woodland trails and see what wildlife you can spot as you explore the beautiful nature around the Museum. For an extra bit of fun, grab an “I Spy” activity sheet from the ticket office and follow our spotter trail through the historic buildings and gardens.
  • From Living History to Seasonal Celebrations: We host a wide range of events throughout the year, including historical re-enactments, seasonal celebrations, outdoor theatre, heritage festivals and special activity days for kids. 
  • Heritage Crafts: Learn more about traditional crafts with our engaging demonstrations. Our craft practitioners range from spoon carvers, lace makers, chair makers, and straw plaiters. You can also catch the blacksmith, wheelwright, leatherwork, spinning, natural dyeing, weaving and flint knapping demonstrations.
  • Houses Inhabited: On selected days you’ll find our volunteer costumed interpreters inhabiting some of the historic buildings on our site. Our dedicated team of volunteers breathe life into history, creating an engaging and immersive experience for our visitors. They love talking about the history of our buildings and what life would have been like for the past occupants.
  • Exhibitions: We have an exhibition space in the High Wycombe Furniture Factory.  In the past this has hosted an exhibition of 3D images and the winners of our photography competition.

Facilities

  • Parking: We have a large car park with dedicated disabled parking. We have racks for securing bicycles. 
  • Food and Drink: Alongside our café in Skippings Barn we have ample picnic benches around the site should you want to bring your lunch. At larger events additional caterers will also be on site.
  • Dogs: Dogs are welcome at Chiltern Open Air Museum.

  • We are open Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays and daily in Bucks school holidays.
  • We will be closed on Monday 18 May for a private event. And on Sunday 28th June to allow our team to celebrate our 50th anniversary.
  • Our opening times will be 10am to 5pm. From Sunday 25 October we will close at 4pm.

  • By Car: We are close to several main routes and can be reached from the M25 at Junction 17. Follow the brown tourist signs to the Museum via Denham Way and Chalfont Road.
  • By train: The Chiltern Line from Marylebone or the Metropolitan Line from Baker Street to Chalfont & Latimer Station or Chorleywood Station are within short taxi rides of the Museum.
  • By Bus: There are no buses to Newland Park. The nearest bus stop in Chalfont St Giles, around 30 minutes walk away, is on the A30, and 353 routes.
  • Parking: We have a large car park with dedicated disabled parking. We have racks for securing bicycles.
