The British Library is the national library of the United Kingdom and one of the largest libraries in the world. Our shelves hold over 170 million items – a living collection that gets bigger every day. Access our collections (with a Reader pass) or visit our building and exhibitions. 

We have many books, but we also have so much more - newspapers, sound recordings, patents, prints and drawings, maps and manuscripts. The Library is also home to some of the world’s most exciting, beautiful and significant books, maps and manuscripts. From the Magna Carta and Shakespeare to Florence Nightingale and Gandhi.

Facilities

  • Parking: Parking bays for Blue Badge holders can be found on Ossulston Street. Our Ossulston Street entrance is fully ramped and is approximately 100 metres from the main entrance. There are also public metered bays in this area.
  • Food & Drinks: You'll find delicious hot and cold food and drinks at the cafés and restaurant at our London site to keep you going during your visit.
  • Toilets: Accessible toilets can be found on all floors. The nearest Changing Places toilet is at King's Cross station.
  • Lockers: Visitors to our Reading Rooms are required to leave coats and bags in the cloakroom or in a locker. 
  • WiFi: Free Wi-Fi is available. No username or password is required but you will need to agree to the terms and conditions to access it.
