Description

Brecon Mountain Railway is a scenic heritage steam railway running through the heart of Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park. Starting from Pant Station, just north of Merthyr Tydfil, it offers one of Wales’ most memorable railway journeys through reservoirs, forests, and mountain scenery. It is a popular attraction for families, visitors, and railway enthusiasts of all ages.

The main attraction is the 9.5-mile return steam train journey from Pant to Torpantau, travelling along part of the historic Brecon & Merthyr Railway. Passengers ride in all-weather observation carriages hauled by a vintage steam locomotive, passing Pontsticill, the Taf Fechan Reservoir, and climbing to Torpantau, one of the highest railway summits in Britain at 400 metres above sea level. Other activities include single-journey train rides, Footplate rides on the steam locomotive, the Cupola Experience, train rides combined with guided walks, visits to the engineering workshop, and facilities at Pant Station Tearooms and Pontsticill Lakeside Café.

A Full Return Trip costs £23.50 online (£25.00 on the door) for adults, £11.75 online (£12.50 on the door) for children, with under-2s travelling free. Single journeys range from £11 to £18.55 for adults and £6 to £9.75 for children, with dogs costing £2–£3 depending on the route, and wheelchair pricing matching standard fares. Special experiences are priced at £100.70 for a Footplate Ride, £33.92 for the Cupola Experience, and £42 for Train Rides with a Guided Walk, while groups of 20 or more receive discounted rates.

Brecon Mountain Railway offers a relaxed yet spectacular way to experience the Brecon Beacons. The combination of steam travel, dramatic scenery, and well-run facilities makes it enjoyable for all ages. It’s an ideal day out for families, nature lovers, and anyone wanting to experience Wales’ landscapes from a unique heritage railway.
