Description

Blackrock Castle Observatory is a magnificent 16th-century castle located in Cork that now serves as a premier science centre and observatory. Admission provides a "Journey Through Time and Space," offering access to an award-winning science centre and a self-guided tour of the historic fortifications. It perfectly blends Cork’s rich medieval history with contemporary scientific discovery, making it a must-visit "home away from home" in the city.

The venue features the "Ireland in Space" exhibition, which explores the deep connection between Irish ancestors—from Stone Age monument builders to Apollo 11 mathematicians—and the stars.  Visitors can also explore "Alien Worlds," an interactive look at exoplanets orbiting distant stars and the ingenious scientific methods used to study them. In addition to these permanent fixtures, the observatory hosts an array of exciting visiting exhibitions and events that celebrate Ireland's ongoing contributions to the European Space Agency and the modern space industry.

Adult tickets are priced at €9, while students and seniors (OAP) can enter for €7. Children's tickets are €6, though children under 5 years old are free, and a family pass for two adults and two children is available for €26.

Blackrock Castle Observatory should be visited for its unique atmosphere where a historic fortress meets cutting-edge astronomical research. It offers a fascinating insight into how Ireland's scientific future is just as bright as its ancient connection to the sun and moon. Open daily from 10:00 to 18:00, it provides an educational and thrilling experience for visitors of all ages in a beautiful riverside setting.

Features

Ireland in Space

  • From Newgrange to New Space - Ireland's connection to Space may be deeper than you think... From our earliest days, the Irish people have had an abiding connection to the stars.
  • Our Stone Age ancestors built monuments that tracked the Sun, while more recent ancestors pioneered fields of mathematics that proved integral to the Apollo 11 Moon landing.
  • Irish scientists have made their mark on the world history of astronomy and exploration, but our future looks even brighter.
  • As Irish scientists at the European Space Agency work on the next generation of Space exploration, Irish businesses are beginning to reap the rewards that the New Space industry has to offer. Visit us today to further explore Ireland’s place in Space.

Alien Worlds

  • There are worlds out there beyond the horizon of our own solar system. Let’s explore them together… Exoplanets are planets that orbit stars outside our own solar system.
  • Our capacity to document and study them is still relatively new, but with recent advancements in the field we have seen an exponential increase in the number of worlds we know of.
  • These planets exist far beyond anything we can see in detail with even our most advanced optical telescopes, but through absolutely ingenious scientific methods we have already learned a great deal about these alien worlds.
