  • Gardens: Ideal place to start a circular walk to the village of Gilsland (takes approximately 1 1/2 hours). No kites allowed due to overhead cables but there are fields nearby for children to play and run around in.
  • Exhibition: The exhibition provides the perfect introduction to Hadrian's Wall and the history of Birdoswald Roman Fort. There is an intorductory film, artefacts and lot's of hands-on fun for families.

  • Parking: Parking is located approx 200 metres from the site with room for over 50 cars. Parking charges apply to non-members. Parking free for members. 
  • Food And Drink: The café serves a selection of soups, sandwiches, cakes, and hot and cold drinks.
  • Toilets: Male, female and disabled toilets available. There are also baby changing facilities.
  • Dogs: Dogs on a lead allowed outside. Assistance dogs welcome.

Join Curator of History Andrew Roberts on this guided walking tour of the 'Roman Mile' – a beautifully preserved, continuous section of Hadrian's Wall that incorporates all of the elements of the system, including a fort, turrets, a roman bridge, and two milecastles. We will explore Hardian's grand vision for the frontier and how the wall functioned, as we walk from Birdoswald Roman Fort to Gilsland.

  • Road Access: 4 miles west of Greenhead off B6318. Signposted from A69 Carlisle-Hexham road at Brampton roundabout.
  • Bus Access: The AD122 bus runs all year round and stops at Walltown Quarry, about 5 miles from Birdoswald. The 168 bus runs regularly from Haltwhistle, where you can change from the AD122 bus. 
  • Train Access: Brampton 8 miles, Haltwhistle 7 miles.
